Four Canon Digital Cameras, Same Lens, Same Scene, Infrared

Since we had a few Canon’s here for testing, we decided to photograph the same scene with the same lens in infrared to see how the different models handled it.
On a day when I was out in the country testing cameras, I decided to try something that made sense to me: photography the same scene with the same lens on the four Canon dSLR’s I had with me, the 1Ds Mark III, 350D, 400D and 450D. I was particularly curious in the progression across the 350D, 400D, 450D series, but since I had the 1DsM3 it made sense to use it too. Note that the 350D is my converted for infrared by MaxMax.com model.

So below you will find the images straight from the camera, a mono conversion from one channel and a 100% section from the image. You’ll find the RAW files up on our new Digital Infrared RAW Sample File page. All cameras used auto white balance, except the converted 350D. As usual, we used a Hoya R72 filter. The lens is the Canon 17-35mm f2.8L.

First the straight images:

Converted 350D (1/125sec f5.6 100ISO)

400D (30sec f4 100ISO)

450D (30sec f4 100ISO)

Next the monochrome images from one channel. These have been levels adjusted and sharpened:

Now the center of the image at 100% (I’ve chosen the best monochrome channel, but applied no levels or sharpening):

And lastly, here is a second scene, just the best monochrome image:

All these cameras can produce great infrared images.

you can shoot IR without converting the camera. Buy a Hoya R-72 filter, set the camera on a tripod, Set it for about 30 seconds and the lens wide open and take a shot, adjust the exposure appropriately.

Have a read of the two starter IR articles on DIMI for more details. http://www.dimagemaker.com/photography/infrared-photography/infrared-beginners-for-those-new-to-infrared-photography/
