What are the three secrets to successfully marketing photos and paintings?
According to veteran photographer and artist Laurence Gartel, who has exhibited internationally for over 30 years, and whose art was recently acquired by the Victoria and Albert museum (V&A) in London, the secrets are:
1. Do something controversial.
2. Look unusual.
3. The quality of your work has to transcend everyone else’s.
Controversy creates interest, notes Gartel. “Surprised? That’s how Madonna and everyone else who caught a break wound up being discovered or got ink. Just go look at the news,” notes Gartel, who has been named the recipient of the 2009 FotoFusion FotoMentor Award by The Palm Beach Photographic Centre in Florida.
Meanwhile, if you want to promote art or photography, you can forget about meekly inheriting the earth, or the internet.
“Boring people get no press in the ARTS,” Gartel says. “When it’s time for a photograph, you have to pretend you are on stage.”
Being controversial and standing out from the crowd are only two of the ingredients.
The third is the most important, having the great work to back up controversial, unusual, you.
“Your work should not look like anyone else’s, nor should it be presented the same,” says Gartel. “Do something to make it stand out from the crowd. In today’s digital world, everything is jammed. What I was doing 30 years ago would still be considered avant garde today. Thinking out of the box means doing out of the box. Don’t follow trends, create them. Don’t be afraid of rejection. You have heard rejection a million times already, and you are still in one piece.”
