Corel Digital Painting Competition
Results of the April Competition
The first month of this competition received some great entries. A winner was hard to pick because of there being two very strong 'directions' in the submissions.
The April Winner of the Corel Painter IX.5 software is Ansgard Thomson of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with her entry 'Instant Picasso'

This was created as another work on black background .I used to have it animated
for my website entertainment .People were asking me what I was doing .so I said I create " Instant Picasso" S I always loved his approach to art that always inspired me to do my own
art and ignore what anyone else was doing .
Judges comments: 'Very strong and creative use of digital painting techniques'.
Ansgard's website can be seen here.
Runners up were:
Mark Leeds, Cerritos, California, USA www.msleeds.com

Judges comments: 'Great abstract piece'
Both entries are created using Photoshop. Starting
with a blank screen I work by adding layer upon layer
until I have a derived goal.
This entry is called "One More, For The Road"
and portrays danger in over indulging.
Both original print sizes are 12.25x16.25 at 300 dpi.
also
"New Beginnings" and portrays hope for the future.

Judges comments: 'A very beautiful digital painting. Lovely work.'
This pastel of the wild lily was painted from a reference photograph taken on a spring wildflower walk. It was traced in Painter and painted using several brushes - watercolor camel, grainy water blender, Den's funky chunky, big wheel airbrush and the grainy blender. There was color added to the background
Kim Treffinger, San Diego, CA, USA www.TreffingerStudio.com

Judges comments: 'Great use of painting of a commercial photography modification type'
This entry is "Dancing Sisters". I photographed this image digitally with a Canon 20D. Starting in Photoshop I first removed many distracting elements of people, railings, tables that were not contributing to the composition I wanted. I also increased the saturation. Then I worked on a clone in Painter 9 and painted over some remaining unwanted details and began alot of blending work, and I painted the blur out of the hand of one dancer.

This entry is titled "Morgan". I photographed this image digitally with a Canon 20D. I worked the image in Painter 9 using a clone and creating a messy underpainting through which I began to bring back selected subtle details of the figure and metal gate using various media brushes.
Other interesting painting entries are shown on a second page. Click here.
