Corel Manipulated Photography Competition
Results of the August Competition
The August Winner of the Corel PSP X software is Randy SnowDog Monteith of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada www.pbase.com/snowdog

This one is called " Wither "
Its composed of several layers one of the girl, the trees and an adjustment layer for the overall blue in the image. A final layer
that is composed of layer effects to make the water drops , shows that you can clevely play with the opacities of the layer styles
to create raindrops or even tears.
Judges comments: 'Just beautiful. It makes you feel cold just looking at it. The best of this sort of image we have seen'.

" The Otherside of No Tomorrow "
The idea here was to recreate one of the High Speed photography experiments that Harold "Doc" Edgerton created many years ago.
I wanted of course to recreate the shot of a bullet ripping thru a playing card and capturing the whole thing on film. Having no gun or
highspeed flash I had to rely on PhotoShop CS. First I created the playing card with the photo of the Ninja Warriror. Next I cut this into two
layers one for each half of the card. Then I worked on tearing the cards using alot of cuting and pasting, blurring, and dodging. The bullet
creating from a cylynder graduation also needed to have the scratches from being fired, this was done on a separate layer. This was very
challenging but alot of fun at the same time.

Title: Despair's Meal
Created in Photoshop using many layers of photographs, scans, and Bryce Renders. Most of the layering modes were "normal", "overlay", and "luminosity" Photos included various plants and seedpods as well as rusty metal and peeling paint. The bones were scans and the faces were rendered in Bryce.
Judges' Comments: "This image was a VERY close second and a great example of pushing Bryce renders combined with images as far as you can. Great work"

Image description: This, as well as other images that will be inthis series, portrays the darker side of childhood Fairy Tales. On the surface there's a touch of brightness and a good adventure beckoning. Looking past the surface and between the thorns and litter we may find a tale that speaks to us of our own worries and fears as we walk through life.
The image was created in Photoshop 6 using multiple layers (46) of photographs, fractals, and Bryce renderings. Layers were masked and manipulated and most were totally or nearly completely desaturated to achieve a subdued range of colors fitting the dark theme

Judges comments: 'Another strong competitor, this one has simplicity and style. Only the strongly central composition was a concern to some.'
AGIA KYRIAKI SI FI
This image is a manipulation of a photo taken in normal early evening conditions.
It is a photo of the moon rising over the island of Agia Kyriaki, situated just off the island of Leros, Greece in the Aegean Sea.
I first added texture and painted the entire image. I then inverted the image, and again painted the moon, and adjusted levels.
All work was done in Photo Shop CS2

AGIA KYRIAKI SEPIA
This image is a sepia line rendering of a photo taken in normal daylight conditions.
This is an image of a local sailing club’s regatta around the island of Agia Kyriaki, situated just off the island of Leros, Greece in the Aegean Sea.
I manipulated the image using PhotoShop CS2.
I first used the neon glow filter, then inverted image, and desaturated it. I then used sepia filter and adjusted levels.

Judges comments: 'Great use of energy and color'
Both of these photographs were taken at the annual Festival Of The Thousand Polleras. The pollera is the national costume of Panama.
Image #1 - La Pollera 1.
My workflow is as follows:
I prep the photograph in Photoshop CS2 to increase the saturation and contrast. I use Fo2PIX’s Buzz X to eliminate extraneous detail. Then I take the image into Synthetik Software’s Studio Artist and I paint 12 or more images. Next step is to move the Studio Artist paintings to Corel Painter IX where I clone bits and pieces of the paintings into a master image. Staying in Painter I stop cloning and start painting freehand. Last step is back to Photoshop for final tweaking of color, levels, curves, etc.
I have developed this way of working fairly recently - I enjoy the complexity of it and the painterly feel I achieve.

Photo taken with the Canon 20D at a skateboard park. The scene was very busy with lots of skaters, bikes and a very cluttered background. I edited the photo in PS CS2 using curves, hue and saturation adjustments then opened in Painter IX where I painted it using many brushes and layers and eliminating all the undesirable clutter.
