"How the music made magic II" is a digital collage containing a number of photographs and fragments of text all merged with an underlying structure of geometric forms texture mapped with additional photographs and rendered in Bryce. Postwork is done in Photoshop and Painter. This image reflects the inter-connectivity of the senses and the concomitant sensations, both auditory and visual, that are created by music.
Judges comments: 'Fantastic, rich, beautiful. A great use of many pieces of software'.

Judges comments: 'A joyful and clever piece that has it all'
BrainStorming the name came about because of all the Thinking I had to do to achieve my final result and also the young boy
has many years of brainstorming about many things ahead of him. Whether its playing pranks on the neighbour or the cure for
world hunger.
" BrainStorming " Image How to
1) I started with the B&W photo of the lightbulb and did some editing on the filament of the bulb to suit my purposes of
introducing the boy on the swing into the image.
2) I made a new layer ontop of the lightbulb layer and used a selection from the bulb's layer and contacted down by about 4
pixels. Then added a multi-coloured gradient that I then adjust with the liquify tool. Next this layer was blended by changing the
blending mode to Multiply.
3) Next I added the image of the boy on the swing and used a layer mask so only he showed through and to get rid of any of
his background.
4) The final trick was cutting up the image into 25 equal rectangles and then pasting them onto 25 separate layers and using
the Transfoming tools to reshape them all slightly. The I added indivdual shadows to each of them.

" Echoes of Laughter " Image How to
I wanted to take this photo of this laughing girl and echo her smile of joy. The following techniques are easy to learn on their
own but combine them and use your imagination and have fun!
Step one was to create a " Sketch " Version of the photo and place it as a layer on top of the original photo layer.
Sketch - 1) After loading the picture I made a new layer. Layer/New/Background from Layer
2) Rename this new layer Sketch 1
3) Turnoff the visibility of the original Photo Layer in the Layer Palette
4) With the Sketch 1 layer highlighted choose Image/Adjustments/ Desaturate
5) Now duplicate the Sketch 1 layer and rename it Sketch 2
6) Invert the Sketch 2 layer - Image/Adjustments/Invert
7) Change the blending mode of the Sketch 2 layer to Color Dodge
8) Now most of your image will look white with some small black parts
9) Choose Filter/Blur/Gaussion Blur. I used a Radius value of 3.4
10) On the Layer menu choose Merger Visible
11) Now we have our Sketch version of the original photo.
Step two:
1) Next I turned back on the original Image Layer and change the sketch layers blending mode to Multiply
2) I move the Sketch later over towards the top left corner and then added a Mask layer and painted with a soft black brush any
of the Sketch later that showed thru to the original image layer
3) Then I duplicated the Sketch layer and scaled it down a bit and moved the whole layer to the top left hand corner.
4) The last step was to change the Opacity of the New Sketch later to 40%

Judges comments: 'Lovely, peaceful image with striking tonality and great contrast between the statue and the plants. Love it.'
This is an image captured inside Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, St Paul, MN, April 24th 2006. The image was taken in infrared with a digital SLR camera. The final image is reduced from a HDR (High Dynamic Range) image which was built from 6 camera RAW images each one stop apart. In order to have the colors I wanted the image was manipulated in Channels and then Hue/Saturation.

Judges comments: 'Nice painting version of sunflowers. Great color'
Blue Teapot 3:
I recently took a series of over 40 photos of 6 sunflowers I bought at the supermarket. I have been working in series to experiment with many different ways of manipulating the same subject matter.
I prep the photograph in Photoshop CS2 to increase the saturation and contrast. I use Fo2PIX’s Buzz X to eliminate extraneous detail. Then I take the image into Synthetik Software’s Studio Artist and I paint as many paintings as I think I will need to work with. Last step is back to Photoshop for layering the different paintings and tweaking of color, levels, curves, etc. as well as dodging and burning and some hand drawing. The background is a scan of a piece of Bali batik fabric.

Blue Teapot 4
Same workflow as above but this version has a scan of an old piece of paper as the background as well as a B&W sketcher action as one of the layers.

I combined two images initially; one of the girl and the sailboat and another of the seashore using Corel Painter IX and then worked that image using both MS Digital Image Pro and Corel Painter IX to produce a very soft pastel rendering. My final step was to apply a lighting effect in Corel Painter to give the figure just a little more emphasis.

Virginia Beach Photoshop CS2 image - I blended four different digital images using layers blend. I adjusted colors with hue and saturation command. I used layer mask to delete sections of different layers.

Apple Mountain Photoshop CS2 image - I blended four different digital images using layers blend. I adjusted colors with hue and saturation command. I used warp to stylize a text layer. I also duplicated and roated the same text layer.

Image Name: Jasmine Dreams
A combination of an old postcard pinup and some flowers. I liked the dreamy-eyed look of the figure. The entire thing brought to mind old movies of vamps and the scent of Jasmine on the breeze.
