Power Retouche Fine Photography Competition
Results of the September Competition
Some very impressive photography was entered for this competition.
The September Winner of the Power Retouche software is Richard M. Bulger, of Wellington, New Zealand.

My entry is a photo of an albino peacock shot with a FujiFilm FinePixS5500. Settings were 1/25s,f/4.0, ISO 100 using a monopod. The photo was taken in Black & White with some tint added using Picasa 2 and the wire netting of the cage has acted as a black frame around the top arc of the peacock’s fan. The photo has been resized to meet competition requirements.
Judges comments: 'This is a great and striking image that has been well handled'.
Also our second choice image was by Rick:

I was about to make some bread and the light through the kitchen window looked good, so this is an early attempt at a “still life”. The photo was taken with a Fujifilm FinePix S5500, settings 1/220s, f/2.8, ISO 100. I used Picasa 2 to crop and tint the photo.
Runners up were:

Judges comments: 'A great picyure, the sky is just fantastic'
Jeffrey S. Waldron, Amherst, MA, USA

Judges comments: 'A lovely image with great color.'
This is a photograph of some of the plants and flowers at the base of the observation tower in the Mount Sugarloaf State Park in Western Massachusetts. The picture was taken with a Canon 5D camera during the late afternoon on Septemeber 12, 2006. No enhancements were made to the photograph as the camera recorded it.

This is a photograph I took at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida during the “Wishes” fireworks presentation in 2006. I took this freehand without a tripod using my Olympus E300 dSLR and a rear curtain flash. I only had to use the shadow/highlight filter in Photoshop CS to lighten up the darker areas.

Kalalau Valley on Kauai is world famous. When I arrived midday this June, a four hour rainstorm was just commencing. I decided to gamble and return around 6 pm and caught one of nature's light shows. The setting sun was playing with the clouds as they drifted up the 4200 foot cliffs. I have many keepers from this shoot.

Montana de Oro is a California state park, a few miles south of Morro Bay. It was a sunny August day elsewhere, but at the beach the marine layer was laying on the gloom big time. Most of the other shots I took that day suffered. This one, however, would not have had the same sky and color on a sunny day.

Caption: "One needn't go far to witness a soul-stirring sunset. This one was taken from my backyard."
Description: It's said that "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." But one also has to know where to look. Who would have thunk that beyond my backyard, over the trees and electric power lines, the sunset would paint a majestic panorama of orange and red?
Manipulations limited to levels, color and contrast.

Caption: "Pelican Row. Prime Beachfront property. And rent-free, too!"
Description: Photo was taken on Naples, Florida, beach. The posts were all that were left of a fishing pier that four hurricanes destroyed last year (2005). They've built a new one somewhere down the shore, so this is now the pelicans' prime beachfront property.

Title: Partly dismantled gas station
Description: This is what remains of an old gas-station in downtown
Oslo; Norway. It is one of the few samples of streamline moderne
style that remains in the city, and is painted in an almost glowing
bright orange. I think many of this old gas stations are beautyful,
and try to capture as many of them as fine photographs before they
are gone forever.

Title: Siesta
Description: I spotted this sleeping gentleman outside a busy shopping mall in the industrial north-west of England. I was struck by his relaxed pose, and how he constituted an island of calmness in the middle of the bustle of modern life. I composed the frame with the gentleman dead center, and used a long shuttertime to accentuate the business of everyone else.
