REALVIZ Creative Panorama Competition

Results of the April Competition

If we thought judging February and March was hard, April was even harder. Like last month, getting it down to five was not too hard, relatively speaking, but then choosing from those last five was so hard. In the end it came down to really fine, subtle distinctions that might not be so visible on the lower resolution web images shown here.

The April Winner of the REALVIZ Stitcher Express software is Larry Hill, of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

This scene overlooks the Sierra Nevada forming the backwall of Yosemite. The panorama was assembled, adjusted and corrected from six images using Photoshop CS. It was photographed with the Nikon D1x using a Promaster 60-300 f/4-5.6. Larry's web site is here.

Judges comments: 'This is a great panorama that mixes the beautiful softness of the clouds with the solidity of the rocks and that great tree line across the bottom'.

Runners up were:

Espen Mills, Stavanger, Norway www.espenmills.com

Judges comments: 'Another perfect panorama, the sky is just fantastic'

This is a panorama photo from the western parts of Norway. It is taken between the two small villages Etne and Skånevik, on the old post route. For more than hundred years ago the postman walked over this mountain each day with the post, but now a days people only walk here for hiking and recreation. You can see me and my dog's tracks in the snow.
The panorama was stiched together from eight vertical shots from my 10D and 70mm focal length. It was a real pain to remove all the dust-spots from the sensor, photographing white snow at f:11! I REALLY have to clean the sensor!

Judges comments: 'A very creative panorama using IR. Creative and interesting.'

This photo was taken on a bright spring day at a pond behind the office building I work in. It was shot with a Nikon D70 and a Hoya R72 infrared filter. The images were stitched using Hugin.

Judges comments: 'Great light'

These are panoramic images I took while on vacation in Mont Tremblant, Quebec in the summer of 2005. Each panorama is made up of 8 images and stitched manually in Photoshop CS. The images were taken using an Olympus c4000 digital camera and a .25X wide angel adapter. The panoramas are of two mountain lakes in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada.

Judges comments: 'Beautiful'

This image is of the Pines Resort Boatshed on Lord Howe Island. A beautiful spot to come and relax to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea. A World Heritage listed site located between Australia & New Zealand boasts the southern most coral reefs in the world. The remnants of a shield volcano that rose from the sea floor nearly 4 kilometres below now only covers 10 percent of it's original area, the volcanic cones rise to over 800 meters and are visible in the background of this photograph often capturing clouds or creating their own weather.
The photograph was shot on a Nikon F70 using 35mm negative film. The resulting 18 images were scanned on a FlexTight 949 then combined using Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio producing a 14900 x 2334 pixel image for a LightJet Photographic printer.
