REALVIZ Creative Panorama Competition
Results of the June Competition
The June Winner of the REALVIZ Stitcher Express software is Richard Y. Kain, of Minneapolis, MN, USA.

Here is a 360 degree panorama constructed in Photoshop using a filter I wrote that corrects distortions arising from the camera's geometry, and then merging the images by hand. This image was constructed from about 12 images taken with a Nikon D70S modified to take infrared images. The pictures were taken atop an old water tower, which does not permit one to use a fixed tripod; in fact, you have to walk around to the openings. All the images were taken hand-held. The skyline of Minneapolis, MN, is in the center.
Judges comments: 'A nicely done 360 taken under difficult circumstances that works beautifully. IR is a great medium for a different interpretation of reality'.

Here is a 360 degree panorama constructed in Photoshop using a filter I wrote that corrects distortions arising from the camera's geometry, and then merging the images by hand. This image was constructed from about 12 Ektachrome images taken with a Hasselblad X-Pan using their 30mm lens, which gives a 94 degree width. The camera was positioned vertically, which permits the complete panorama to be taller than usual. The image was taken at 18,200 foot elevation in Nepal; it shows Mount Everest to the left of the center (a dark rounded peak); the mountain is about 10 km away from the camera.
Runners up were:
Tim O'Neill, North Platte, NE, USA

Judge's comments: 'A stunning image that was well spotted and shot. The only negative is that the black around the top detracts and perhaps could have been burned out or cropped'
"Fire and Light", This is a pan that was stitched in photoshop CS from six images. It is a image of a thunder storm that came at sunset.

"Light Keeper", this is a pan stiched in photoshop CS from 5 vertical images. The lighthouse is in Marqiette Michigan.

Judges comments: 'A lovely part of the world and a nice use of panorama.'
Shot with a Canon S45 and stiched with Photoshop CS. There are 3 seperate images used here. A bit of burning and removing some people from the beach. The image is Cotosloe Beach in Western Australia.
Harry Lake, BUSSUM, Netherlands

Judges comments: 'Nicely done under tough lighting conditions'
Waterwolf is the name of this pumping station out in the middle of nowhere to the west of the city of Groningen, Netherlands.
Waterwolf_interior190105ezstr_resize.jpg consists of five images taken with a Logitech Pocket Digital 130.

A compilation of seven or eight images taken with the Logitech Pocket Digital 130 (1.3mp) with the colour pushed slightly, though this may not be necessary (my monitor needs calibrating). The Naardermeer is Holland's oldest nature reserve and is a lake surrounded by the woods seen here. About 15 miles SE of Amsterdam.
Larry Hill, La Veta, CO, USA http://www.pbase.com/fletcher_hill

"Western Sunset" shows part of the fifteen minutes of glory that reigned over La Veta Pass in southern Colorado on the evening of June 1. It was photographed with a Nikon D1X and Nikkor AF 28-85 f/2.8-4 D lens, in a four-shot handheld panorama. They were merged and balanced using Photoshop CS.

"Star Dune" is the name of the tallest dune in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, rising 750 feet from the floor of the San Luis Valley. This was taken with a dry Nikon D1X and Promaster 60-300 f/4-5.6 just as thunderstorms inundated the region in early June. It was merged with Autostitch and adjusted in Photoshop CS.
Judge's comments: 'Larry's work is consistently great, as these two images show.'

Title: Time Flies in Las Vegas
This is compiled from four eight-shot panoramas taken from early morning through night on June 23, 2006, from the eighteenth floor of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.
The panoramas were shot with a Canon 5D and each assembled with Photoshop CS Photomerge. The panoramas were then superimposed and further work done in CS.
The originals had reflections of buildings in the glass window stripes of the building wing to the left, so I reflected the final panorama in the windows.
Judge's comments: ' An interesting panorama that is a great attempt. It would have benefitted from some work on the dark bands in the sky'
