A World of Photography Exhibition

Early in 2006 a discussion had taken place on one of the Yahoo photography forums about organizing a physical exhibition of fine art photography from around the world. Co-incidentally with this, the small university that I teach at (the Australian Academy of Design) and run their Multimedia and Photomedia degrees had moved into a new location where we had a brand new gallery space of decent proportions. Soon after this move it became clear that there would be an opportunity to mount an exhibition there before the end of the year. Running the idea of a photography exhibition past the powers that be gained a positive response and so I put it to members of some select Yahoo photography groups.

To make things easier to organize and quite democratic we did the following: I created a web gallery off of one of my websites (www.experimentaldigitalphotography.com) where interested people could upload low-res versions of five or so images. After a set time we then individually rated each image, with people being asked not to rate their own. So what we ended up with was each image rated between zero and five. Looking at the results and knowing the size of the gallery a score of anything above 2.7 seemed to provide not only enough but not too many works, but also seemed to be a natural divide in the quality of the works. So we took that as the dividing point and anything above 2.7 was in. Photographers then had to ship the work to Australia for the Academy to hang it. In practice most of the work survived the trip well, though a few of the smaller ones suffered a bit from not being mounted for shipping.

The exhibition ended up comprising thirteen artists:

Alan Lau – Australia

Dave Meddings – Canada/Switzland

Djordje Veljovic – Serbia

Gary Wornell – Finland

Ivan Jelisavcic - Serbia

John Villinski – USA

Matt Mawson – Australia

Mohir – Israel/UK

Salongo Lee – USA

Sergej Petrovski – Serbia

T.K. Thompson – USA

Vivienne Morgan – USA

Wayne J. Cosshall – Australia

The exhibition is running through an extended showing period of 27th of October to 23rd of December, at the Australian Academy of Design Gallery, 220 Ingles Street, Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Opening hours are 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Below are some pictures of the exhibition the day it went up. I will shoot better ones and put them up soon.
