July 08 ThinkTank Photo Competition

We had some great entries in the July competition for photography and digital art.
The July 2008 ThinkTank Photo Competition was on the theme of people. It was open to both photography and digital art.

We had a lot of great entries and so we wish to acknowledge a few close runners up. We were very taken with Felix Menard’s Hose, Joe Nalven’s Intensity-Web and John Tomley’s Morning Ritual.

But the clear winner of the Digital Holster 10, value US$45, is J.J. Guy Longtin’s stunning AAA_sw_bridge_med. This image has great atmosphere and is striking.

A World of Infrared Photography Exhibition & Competition Winner

The AWoIR results are up. Some stunning infrared photography was entered and picking a winner was tough.
A World of Infrared Photography exhibition and competition is up.

As expected, we received a lot of great entries for this competition, with an excellent prize of a $400 allowance towards any MaxMax.com product or service, such as filters or having a camera converted to infrared. It was a tough competition to judge, because entries covered quite a range of approaches. We got it down to a shortlist of five, then two and finally chose the winner. In fact everyone who entered is a winner because we were universally impressed with the great work people are doing.

The winning entry is by Zach Stern of Gaithersburg, MD, in the US. Called “Field 0” the feeling from the judges was that this image went beyond the infrared wow effect to looking at how to make a strong image which is assisted by, rather than dominated, by the IR effect. Congratulations to Zach.

We would also like to talk about the image that came second. While there is no prize for this image, we think it is worth mentioning. This image, called “tallgrass prairie and reader ” by Stanley Schwartz, also crosses from IR wow to great photography. It has a peace and tranquility about it which is stunning. The only comment we could make is that possibly positioning the reader lower down the image and including more sky might have improved it further. But a big “well done”.

All the finalists in A World of Infrared Photography can be viewed in the gallery on DIMW.

The artist statements are either with the images in the gallery or (for longer ones) can be read here.

Congratulations again to all the entrants.
