New Retina Display MacBook Pro Looks Great For Photographers

The new MacBook Pro with the retina display looks to be a great device for photographers.

With a screen resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels, plus up to 16GB of RAM, this seems an idea laptop for photographers. Seven hours of battery life, a fast processor and fast solid state disk space, plus two Thunderbolt and two USB 3 ports bode well for handling Photoshop well and gaining access to all those external hard drives we use. It is also only 1.8cm thick and weighs 2kg.

We look forward to using one.

New Book from Cengage Learning Reveals How to Create Stunning Content for the Internet and the iPad Using Adobe InDesign CS6

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y., May 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Delmar, part of Cengage Learning and a leading provider of learning solutions for ongoing career development and education, today announced a new title focusing on the just-released Adobe® Creative Suite® 6 (CS6) software – Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive: Digital Publishing for the Internet and the iPad. As part of the Revealed series, this new title is among 12 other books to be released in the series based on the CS6 suite of software. Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive will provide in-depth lessons on using InDesign CS6, and show readers how to create web sites with video, sound, hyperlinks, animation and complex interactivity – for both the internet and the iPad.

Through the recent release of CS6, Adobe has transformed InDesign into a layout program not just for print but also for the web and for tablet devices like the iPad. This new upgrade revolutionizes digital publishing and creates enormous opportunities for designers and teachers of InDesign. Just five years ago, a designer wanting to create a web site would need to code in HTML or work in Adobe Flash or Dreamweaver. InDesign CS6 changes all that – now any designer who is proficient with InDesign can create web sites and publish to the iPad.

Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive: Digital Publishing for the Internet and the iPad is a brand new title in the award-winning Revealed series that goes the full distance to teach users how to navigate InDesign’s newest interactive features. The title provides a hands-on approach to demonstrate the process of registering a URL, purchasing, hosting and uploading files to create a web site. In addition to the web, Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive teaches students how to create layouts for the iPad, upload to the iPad and create unique downloadable apps.

“I am excited to continue being a part of the cutting-edge Revealed series,” said Chris Botello, author of Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive: Digital Publishing for the Internet and the iPad. “The recent release of Adobe CS6 has expanded InDesign’s boundaries, and allows users more functionality with designing digital content than ever before. If past users had previously felt left out of web design because of a lack of programming knowledge, those days are over. InDesign CS6 Interactive will teach users to leverage design and visual communication techniques to create visually stunning web pages and iPad publications.”

Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive is Chris Botello’s fourth addition to the Revealed series – with other titles published on InDesign, Illustrator and Advanced Photoshop. Additionally, Botello is a teacher at Tabor Academy in Marion, MA. He co-authored Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive with Dylan Dove, a student from his basic InDesign class at Tabor Academy, currently in his junior year. Botello immediately recognized Dove’s skills with software and his in-depth understanding of the web and HTML coding. Botello demonstrated some of InDesign’s new interactive features to Dove and from there, the idea for Adobe InDesign CS6 Interactive took shape.

PENTAX Announces the K30

B&H Photo Video is excited to announce the launch of the new and much anticipated K30 DSLR Camera from Pentax.

NYC, NY (PRWEB) May 21, 2012

B&H Photo Video is excited to share with photo hobbyists the launch of the new and much anticipatedK30 DSLR Camera from Pentax.

The Pentax K-30 camera is ergonomically designed to be as compact and easy to manipulate as possible while maintaining enough room to house a large APS-C-sized sensor and mirror. The body is also fully weather-sealed and can function properly in temperatures below freezing (14°F / -10°C). A low-profile optical pentaprism provides 100% field of view while the new state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation.

Weather resistant design with 81 seals set in its compact, lightweight, portable body, make the K-30weather, dust and cold resistant with proven functionality in sub-freezing temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C). Its exterior was designed to be both sporty and functional for active outdoor photographers – a large grip for a firm, secure hold of the camera; a low-profile pentaprism housing for reduced height; and a rounded, soft-rubber casing for a solid grip of the camera during vertical shooting.

Additionally, the new K-30 features high-speed burst shooting at a maximum speed of six images per second, a high-speed shutter unit with a top speed of 1/6000 second, and convenient dual electronic dials for quick, fingertip access to exposure control and several Auto Picture and scene modes.

Newly developed SAFOX IXi+ Autofocus (AF) module for improved autofocus performance
The Pentax K30 features the new state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation by incorporating a diffraction lens to minimize chromatic aberration in accordance to the characteristics of each individual lens. A dedicated sensor also factors the light source into its calculations at the time of shooting. 9 of its 11 focus points have cross-type sensors to capture subjects in sharp focus, while a spotbeam assists the AF system during low light situations. Its AF algorithm has also been upgraded in all areas for efficiency and accuracy. A new expanded area AF function allows the sensor module to continue to track a moving subject in AF select mode, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. This greatly improves the accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus shooting, and autofocusing performance when using a telephoto lens.

Optical finder with 100% field of view
While smaller and lighter than traditional mid level DSLR camera models, the K-30 comes equipped with a glass pentaprism finder with a 100% field of view and approximately 0.92X maximum magnification (with a 50mm f/1.4 lens at infinity) to cover the entire field of view for easy focusing and framing. Since its viewfinder delivers a clear view of the subject even in the brightest sunshine while also eliminating parallax, the K-30 responds efficiently and reliably to demanding applications and subjects, such as landscapes requiring delicate, high-precision framing, and sports scenes where the timing of shutter release is critical.

The K-30 also accepts interchangeable PENTAX Natural-Bright-Matte III focusing screens to facilitate manual focusing operation. Optional focus screens include cross-lined and scale types, to accommodate more specialized applications.

Pentax also announces the DA 50mm f/1.8 medium-telephoto autofocus lens, which is designed exclusively for use with the K-mount interchangeable-lens (ILC) digital cameras. Its state-of-the-art optical design technology delivers sharp, clear images from edge to edge. The new 50mm f/1.8 lens delivers a focal length of 50mm or 76.5mm in the 35mm format, and is ideal for photographers of varying levels, from amateurs to professionals. Additionally, the f/1.8 aperture makes it possible to increase camera shutter speed when photographing in poorly lit conditions, which minimizes camera shake and helps eliminate blur.

For extra preventative measures, the front surface of the PENTAX-DA 50mm f/1.8 lens is treated with the original SP (Super Protect) coating, which repels dust, water, grease, and other substances that may adhere to the surface of the lens.

The new K-30 is available at B&H Photo for pre-order, in three body colors: Crystal White and Crystal Blue, with brilliant, glossy finishes; and Black, for a traditional DSLR look. It is also compatible with all PENTAX K-mount lenses.

Fancy a Desktop 3D High Resolution Printer?

Printer With an Expanded Choice of Seven Different 3D Printing Materials
High Temperature Materials

Objet Ltd , the innovation leader in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing, has today launched the new Objet30 Pro – the most versatile professional in-house desktop 3D printer available on the market. Unveiled at RAPID, the new desktop 3D printer offers 7 different materials, including, for the first time on a desktop system, clear transparent material and high temperature resistant material.

The Objet30 Pro is positioned as the ultimate rapid prototyping solution for designers and engineers, ranging from industries such as consumer goods and consumer electronics to medical devices and design consultancies.

The Objet30 Pro takes its place as the new top-of-the-line addition to Objet’s existing desktop 3D printer line which starts at $19,900*. With a small footprint, professional 28 micron print quality and wide ranging material versatility, the Objet30 Pro produces high quality prototypes with a choice of 7 different materials and functional properties, offering designers and engineers a world of possibilities:

  • Objet clear transparent material (Objet VeroClear) for simulating PMMA/glass;
  • Objet High temperature material for heat-resistant static functional testing;
  • Objet polypropylene-like material (Objet DurusWhite) for simulating snap-fit parts; and
  • Four rigid, opaque materials for standard plastic simulation (Objet Vero Family in black, white, gray, and blue).

“Having the correct tools and resources to advance our product development is critical for our organization,” saidGregory Janice, Engineering Manager at Princeton Tec. “The Objet30 Pro’s ability to print parts made with a clear transparent material on a desktop 3D printer combined with its ease of use and versatility made the Objet30 Pro a sound investment for our team.”

Collcap Packaging Ltd., an Objet customer creating innovative cosmetic, perfumery and personal care packaging, has also been testing the new Objet30 Pro desktop 3D printer. Adam Smith, Technical Manager at Collcap, comments, “We knew a desktop machine would meet our capacity requirements quite happily, but for the packaging work we do, we really wanted the range of materials that has previously only been available with bigger machines. The clear transparent material for instance is ideal for prototyping our bespoke fragrance bottles and other glass or clear plastic products, whilst the range of colored rigid materials work perfectly for simulating plastic bottles, caps and fittings. The excellent surface finish and detail provided by the Objet30 Pro are also crucial so that our eye-catching designs look and feel as they’re supposed to when we present them to our customers for approval.”

“The Objet30 Pro is the next evolution in desktop 3D printers developed specifically for professional users”, saidDavid Reis, CEO of Objet. “This desktop 3D printer provides outstanding print quality with a choice of seven materials that until now could only be found in much larger, high-end 3D printers. Sony launches NEX-F3 camera with 180° tilt LCD screen for easy self portraits

New NEX series camera from Sony

  • APS-C size 16.1 megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
  • Auto Portrait Framing for easy, top-quality portraits
  • 180° tilting LCD screen for self-portraits
  • Built-in flash for low-light shooting

Sydney, 17 May, 2012: Sony Australia today launched the latest Compact System Camera, the NEX-F3, packing DSLR- features into a small compact body and price, making it refreshingly accessible for all photographers. The NEX-F3 will allow users to enjoy the creative world of high-quality imaging with interchangeable lenses without the bulk and size of a Digital SLR camera.

The compact sized NEX-F3 features the same space-saving mirrorless design as other cameras in the E-mount family. Far bigger than sensors found in point-and-shoot compacts, the 16.1 effective megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor captures more light for flawless, low-noise stills and crisply detailed Full HD video (50i/25p). Just like traditional DSLR cameras, it’s easy to create beautiful defocus effects with your subject focused sharply against a smoothly blurred background.

The NEX-F3 helps novice photographers craft top-quality portraits with ease. Auto Portrait Framing identifies your subject, trimming the scene to create beautifully composed, high resolution portrait photos.

Self-portraits are simple with a quick 180° flip of the LCD you can press the shutter button, or let Smile Shutter take the picture for you automatically with the three second timer.

Shooting options in dim light or indoors are broadened with the addition of a built-in flash. As introduced on the acclaimed NEX-7, this handy pop-up flash lets you brighten up portraits and other shots without the need to carry an additional flash accessory.

Getting close to the subject used to mean packing a more powerful lens but now you can enjoy high-quality close-ups with Clear Image Zoom which doubles effective magnification of the lens. Unique to Sony, By Pixel Super Resolution Technology maintains superb image detail, tones and textures. Ideal for travel and everyday shooting, it’s a great way to boost your maximum focal length without carrying extra hardware.

For beginners, the NEX-F3 takes the guesswork out of choosing the right camera function with the Superior Auto mode recognising a wide range of scenes and subjects and adjusting the settings with the skill of a seasoned photographer.

From the cameras premium feel, enhanced by a high-quality handgrip, to the battery boost of 18 per cent to 470 shots from a single charge and easy charging via USB, the NEX-F3 is a must have choice for photographers wanting to step up from their point-and-shoot compact.

SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens

An ideal travel partner for not just the NEX-F3 but the entire Sony E-mount family, the new SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE offers a powerful 11x zoom range and superb resolution in an easy to carry lens. Smaller and 12 per cent lighter than its predecessor the SEL18200, the new E-mount lens features Optical SteadyShot, to compensate for the effects of hand-shake. Direct Manual Focus also gives precise control over touch up focus, for fine creative control over beautiful images.

The NEX-F3 Compact System Camera and the SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens will be available in Australia from mid June 2012 and end of June respectively.

New Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS Has f2.0 Lens

Durability Unites with DSLR-Image Quality, Best-In-Class f2.0 Lens, Full 1080p HD Video and Amazing Features for Thrill Seekers, Reef-Loving Explorers and Everyone In Between

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., May 8, 2012 Olympus draws on its heritage of creating rugged, durable cameras that take the worry out of life-on-the-go shooting with the new Olympus TG-1 iHS. Marking a revolution for the Tough Series of Waterproof, Shockproof, Freezeproof, Crushproof and Dustproof compact cameras, the Olympus TG-1 iHS combines incredible durability with iHS technology, the world’s first high-speed bright f2.0 lens on a Tough camera and converter-lens compatibility to create a versatile system camera. The combination of durability and outstanding image quality make it possible to shoot in even the harshest conditions. Capture beautiful underwater scenes and aquatic life, snap photos of dusk-lit peaks or record your ride down the rapids in dazzling 1080p Full HD Video.

Superior Optics
The Olympus TG-1 iHS is the world’s first rugged camera to incorporate an ultra-bright, high-speed f2.0 lens* so you can capture high-quality images at blazing fast shutter speeds, even in low-light conditions. The camera’s three-inch high-resolution OLED display (610K dots) provides excellent visibility in bright situations, enabling you to compose the perfect shot in direct sunlight. Protective coatings help to prevent scratches and cut down on reflective glare, and the new lens on the Olympus TG-1 iHS transforms your photographs with the same FAST AF system technology found in Olympus PEN cameras. Never worry about water droplets obstructing your images thanks to the water-repellent lens coating that prevents water from remaining on the lens surface.

Unmatched Rugged Durability
From atop an Alpine mountain to the depths of a tropical lagoon, the Olympus TG-1 iHS captures the perfect shot in unforgiving environments. Waterproof to 40 feet, Shockproof to 6.6 feet, Freezeproof to 14°F** and even Crushproof to a weight of 220 pounds, the flagship Olympus Tough model is the toughest Tough model to date and an exceptionally high-speed performer with faster start-up time and quicker refresh rates.

Outstanding Image Quality
A high-sensitivity, high-speed 12-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor combined with a blazing fast, DSLR-quality TruePic VI image processor results in high-speed autofocus, enhanced Intelligent Auto for spectacular scene and subject recognition, and 8x Super-resolution Zoom to produce jaw-dropping images in locations that make even the most seasoned photographers cringe. This family of technologies combines for unmatched image quality in challenging shooting conditions with improved lighting, less noise and response times twice as fast as traditional cameras.

Designed specifically to keep up with the on-the-go photographer, the new Super Sport Mode combines high-speed autofocus with extra fast shutter speeds  up to 1/2000 to freeze the action. Conveniently located on the dial, this mode captures five shots in a high-speed burst to ensure crisp shots in even the most extreme action sport settings. Low Light Mode is perfect for capturing the mood of low-light indoor scenes, beautiful sunsets or late night outdoor festivities without ruining the ambience with a bright flash. Shoot like a pro with five frames-per-second high-speed burst shooting and 1080p Full HD videos (1920×1080 pixels) or 60 frames-per-second (3mp) at the touch of button, allowing for slow-motion playback. Thanks to iHS Technology, your videos will benefit from excellent color reproduction and faster processing speeds, while Multi-Motion IS compensates for user movement during recording, creating smoother videos. Linear PCM Recording, an audio technology pioneered by Olympus for professional voice recorders, records your videos with high-definition audio for optimal playback results.

In iAuto mode, the Olympus TG-1 iHS automatically detects the subject, lighting and situation to identify the scene you’re shooting up to 30 different scenes including Night, Sport, Beach and Snow, Underwater Snapshot and Backlight HDR and adjusts the settings for ideal results.

System Expandability
For serious photographers, Olympus is offering system expandability for the Olympus TG-1 iHS. A converter ring allows you to add a lens converter adapter, waterproof Fisheye Converter Lens and Teleconverter Lens for use on land or in water. The Fisheye Converter Lens captures panoramic, wide-angle shots without sacrificing the brightness of the 4x wide optical zoom (25-100mm*) f2.0 lens. The Teleconverter Lens extends your optical zoom from 4x to 6.8x, delivering dramatic close-ups with professional-looking background blur. Combined with the Olympus TG-1 iHS 8x Super-resolution Zoom, which extends the range of the optical zoom with virtually no loss of image quality, you can reach an unmatched 13.6x magnification. Both converter lenses are waterproof to 40 feet. If 40 feet is not deep enough for you, the new Olympus PT-053 underwater housing is designed specifically for the TG-1 iHS, enabling you to dive to depths of 135 feet (45m).

Extreme Versatility
With the GPS and e.compass functions on the Olympus TG-1 iHS, location and landmark information will be displayed and recorded along with every image. The camera is also equipped with a logging function so you can track the route taken from recorded images by using applications such as Google Earth and Picasa. And with the brand-new LI-90 battery, you’ll worry less about battery life and more about your next destination. Mark your spot on the map with the built-in manometer, which records elevation and water depth and even displays a warning when the user approaches a depth of 40 feet. The Olympus TG-1 iHS boasts four different underwater scene modes — Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro — each carefully calibrated to allow for optimal color balance, exposure and flash so you automatically get the best results. An LED illuminator on the front of the camera enhances focus and exposure for macro shooting great for underwater close-ups where light is scarce. The LED illuminator also works in conjunction with the flash to help illuminate your subject in low-light conditions.

New eBook Released Helps Parents Homeschool a Child with Dyslexia

It’s been awhile since we covered anything about dyslexia, a name for a whole spectrum of differences in thinking and learning that a higher proportion of people in the creative arts have. Dyslexia brings great benefits, but also issues to overcome. So we cover dyslexia topics whenever we can.

Writer and homeschooling mother Kerry Jones, in collaboration with Time4Learning.com, has released a new eBook aimed at parents who are homeschooling a child with dyslexia. “Successfully Homeschooling a Child with Dyslexia” comes from the 12 years of experience Jones had homeschooling her own son with dyslexia.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Dyslexia, also called Developmental Reading Disorder (DRD), is a broad term covering many types of difficulties with information processing, leading to reading, writing, and spelling problems.

Parents who have chosen to educate their children at home can often feel overwhelmed when they discover that one or more of their children has a learning challenge. Jones alleviates parents concerns and encourages them by sharing her successes with her own son. She’s proof that homeschooling a child with dyslexia is not only possible, but can often be the very best choice for a child.

“Every child is different, but there is no better teacher student ratio than the one-to-one attention a child receives by learning at home,” attests Mrs. Jones. “And I’ve come to realize that you don’t have to have a degree in special education to help a child with dyslexia. You simply have to have knowledge of the resources available, knowledge of how your child best learns, and the desire to help.”

Jones lays out many of those available resources and other topics within the pages of the eBook, such as:

  •     Recognizing your child’s learning style
  •     Dealing with the emotions and feelings related to having (or parenting a child with) dyslexia
  •     Reading and writing intervention programs
  •     Assistive technology
  •     Reading therapists or dyslexia specialists
  •     Organizational tips

The dyslexia eBook deals with how a homeschooling parent can help a child in their own home, but also provides information on what outside help is available. “Successfully Homeschooling Your Child with Dyslexia” also includes an appendix linking to many of the most helpful resources, websites, and tools on the Web.

In addition, Jones shares her experiences using the Time4Learning online homeschool curriculum and how it was a wonderful fit for her son who is a visual learner. She appreciated the fact that Time4Learning was multimedia-based and interactive, and that it tracked progress for each child and provided assistive on-board tools to help children with learning disabilities.

Time4Learning.com is a subsidiary of VKidz, Inc., a family-owned educational software company dedicated to pioneering online education. Founded by John Edelson in 2003, Time4Learning offers an award-winning online curriculum for preschool to eighth grade. The mission of VKidz is to provide educational technology that is easier to use, more effective and less expensive than existing applications.

LEICA M MONOCHROM: THE FUTURE OF BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

Solms Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG presents the Leica M Monochrom, the world’s first digital camera exclusively for full-frame, 35 mm black-and-white photography. Featuring a sensor designed specifically for this purpose, the new addition to the Leica portfolio enables photographers to capture images in outstanding black-and-white quality, setting entirely new standards. The latest camera in the flagship Leica M-System, the Leica M Monochrom continues the successful story of the Leica rangefinder system, which has written numerous chapters in the history of innovative photography.

“Black-and-white photography is more popular than ever before. Even today, it has lost none of its fascination as an expressive medium, not even for younger generations of photographers. This is confirmed by the numerous monochrome images shown by members of the M-Community, who we are in constant contact with,” said Jesko von Oeynhausen, Product Manager for the M-System at Leica Camera AG. “For the first time ever, we are offering an opportunity to consistently and authentically explore black-and-white photography with the M Monochrom, a tool that is unique in the digital world. The camera’s exclusively black-and-white sensor brings an enormous technical benefit that is reflected in the amazing imaging quality it delivers.”

The 18 MP image sensor of the M Monochrom is perfectly matched to the unique properties of the Leica M-System and the superior performance of Leica M-Lenses. As the sensor does not ‘see’ colors, every pixel records true luminance values – as a result, it delivers ‘true’ black-and-white images that are significantly sharper than comparable exposures from a camera with a color-sensitive sensor.

To allow precise control of tonal values, the Leica M Monochrom offers a raw data histogram display to exhibit original, unprocessed and unmodified raw data. This, combined with a configurable clipping display, allows precise correction or optimization of exposures.

At the touch of a button, images captured by the M Monochrom can be converted with characteristic toning effects from black-and-white film photography (sepia, cold or selenium toning). All users need to

do is save the image in JPEG format and select the desired toning effect – simply and conveniently, with no need for post-processing.

The classic, iconic design of the Leica M-cameras is carried forward by the Leica M Monochrom. The matte-black finish of the chromed top deck allows the camera to be an unobtrusive tool. Only an engraved script on the accessory shoe reveals the product name. The camera features particularly soft leather trim with ideal grip that perfectly complements the camera’s discreet character. The camera package also includes a genuine leather carrying strap in premium full-grain cowhide.

The M Monochrom is supplied complete with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, a professional digital workflow solution. The software is available to customers as an online download after product registration. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom offers a wide range of functions for the management, processing and presentation of digital images. For example, this software allows for the creation of simple print layouts, slide shows and photo books.

A full-version of Silver Efex Pro 2, the world’s leading black-and-white image processing software, is also included in the package. Silver Efex Pro 2 offers an impressive collection of unique and powerful, darkroom-inspired tools for the creation of high quality black-and-white images. Silver Efex Pro 2 emulates over 20 different types of black-and-white film to recreate the glory of classical black-and-white film photography. The emulation of each film type is based on the analysis of many rolls of the respective type and guarantees perfect reproduction of the characteristic look of many popular films from ISO 32 to ISO 3200.

For the production of high-quality black-and-white prints, Leica Camera AG also offers a unique service in collaboration with Whitewall. After registering their Leica M Monochrom on the Leica website, customers can have their digital images from the M Monochrom printed on premium-quality baryte paper. These prints can be ordered from Whitewall through a personal link.

From photojournalism and available light photography to discreet, artistically aesthetic, creative compositions – the Leica M Monochrom adapts flexibly to every application and enables the expression of personal photographic style and consciously creative composition. The enormous potential performance of the current M-Lens portfolio, with focal lengths from 16 to 135 mm, is also fully accessible. In line with Leica’s renowned commitment to extreme system compatibility, almost all lenses of the Leica M range built since 1954 can still be used on the M Monochrom.

All characteristic properties of the Leica rangefinder system are also present in the new Leica M Monochrom. This, for instance, also includes the system’s intuitive and discreet handling. Its manual focusing based on the combined viewfinder and rangefinder concept and aperture priority exposure mode is an aid to photographers rather than placing undesired limitations on their creative freedom. In combination with the monitor display on the back of the camera, the simple menu navigation needs only a few control elements to enable rapid access to the entire range of camera functions. Together with its compact construction, the camera’s almost silent shutter benefits discreet and unobtrusive photography. Photographers can even select the appropriate moment for re-cocking the shutter. When longer exposure times requiring an extremely steady camera stance are essential, a slight pressure on the shutter release button in ‘soft release’ mode is sufficient.

All functions of the Leica M Monochrom are constructed with extreme robustness and a long working life in mind. Its one-piece, full-metal housing, made from a high-strength magnesium alloy, and the top deck and bottom plate, machined from solid brass blanks, provide perfect protection for its precious inner mechanisms. The digital components and shutter assembly of the M Monochrom are similarly constructed with a view to a lifetime of endurance. For photographers, this provides absolute reliability over decades of use. The experienced hands of Leica technicians at the factory in Solms are responsible for the assembly and calibration of M Monochrom bodies and the precise testing of all mechanical and electrical components. Leica Customer Care has decades of experience in repairs and maintenance and therefore creates a solid foundation for long life and enduring value. Even today, the service department maintains and repairs all M-Cameras built since 1954.

The Leica M-System has played a significant role in the development of the company’s performance in recent years. The annual figures have been correspondingly positive since the launch of the Leica M9 in September 2009 and are now registering record revenues.

The Leica M Monochrom in black chrome will be available from Leica dealers including the Leica Store Washington DC beginning in late July 2012.

LEICA S-SYSTEM EXPANDED BY FIVE S-LENSES WITH CENTRAL SHUTTER: AVAILABLE FROM OCTOBER 2012

Solms, Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG is expanding the product range for the Leica S professional camera system with five new central shutter lenses, available from October 2012. The new models are the Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. and Leica Summarit-S 35 mm f/2.5 ASPH. wide-angle lenses, the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. standard lens, the Leica APO-Macro-Summarit-S 120 mm f/2.5 tele-macro lens and the Leica APO-Tele-Elmar-S 180 mm f/3.5 telephoto lens, all of which will also be available in a CS version with a central shutter. Designed and constructed exclusively by Leica, the central shutter available for all S lenses is not only especially compact and efficient, but also has a guaranteed service life of at least 100,000 shutter cycles, making it extremely reliable.

The Leica S2-System features a dual shutter concept, allowing photographers to choose a shutter system to meet their needs and the particular situation before every shot. The camera body is constructed with a metal focal plane shutter offering a top speed of 1/4000th of a second and flash sync at 1/125th. The main switch on the S2 camera body allows users to rapidly change to central shutter use as soon as a CS lens is mounted. With a top speed of 1/1000th of a second, the central shutter offers a working range expanded by three f-stops. Users now have considerably more leeway for creative lighting, such as studio flash systems that may be used to suppress ambient light or to create fill light in bright surroundings at larger lens apertures. As a result of the seamless integration of the central shutter function in the camera’s electronics, photographers can switch rapidly between the two shutter systems at any time.

First and foremost in the development of all products is the consistent dedication to creating tools to fulfill the stringent demands of professional users of the Leica S medium format system in their everyday photographic work. The objective of the Leica S-System is to provide absolutely reliable equipment that guarantees extreme precision and a particularly long operational lifespan.

The new central shutter designed and constructed by the Leica engineers in Solms is a masterpiece of high-tech mechatronics. The Leica central shutter offers high performance and is so compact in size that it can be integrated without any problems in all S lenses. With a guaranteed life of over 100,000 shutter

cycles per lens, it is also extremely durable and dependable in constant use. For the first time, the dust- and splash-proof construction of the lenses and camera now makes it possible to use the system under difficult conditions for ‘on location’ shots with the central shutter without any fears of equipment failure.

The first shipments of the CS versions of the Leica S lenses to Leica dealers including the Leica Store Washington DC will be available from October 2012.

LEICA CAMERA AG EXPANDS THE LEICA S PROFESSIONAL CAMERA SYSTEM

New Leica S-Adapter H Enables use of Hasselblad H Lenses on the Leica S2

Solms, Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG presents a new accessory for the Leica S professional camera system: the Leica S-Adapter H. This adapter allows the portfolio of Hasselblad H- system lenses to be mounted onto a Leica S2 camera body with all lens functions, such as autofocus, central shutter control and automatic diaphragm, retained. The smart electronics of the adapter facilitate the complete integration of the lenses into the Leica S-System.

The Hasselblad H-system features a total of 11 central shutter lenses with focal lengths from 28 to 300 mm. As the S2 features a dual shutter system, users may toggle between the focal plane shutter (FPS) in the camera body or the central shutter (CS) in the lens utilizing the main switch. Photographers now have access to numerous additional lenses that increase the photographic options offered by the Leica S- System.

Hasselblad H-system users also benefit from the new adapter. The versatility of Hasselblad H lenses is expanded considerably when combined with an S2. For instance, as a result of the dual shutter system of the Leica S2, H lenses can be now used with the focal plane shutter at speeds of up to 1/4000th of a second. In combination with the Leica Maestro high-performance image processor, the camera’s image sensor enables perfect, noise-free exposures up to ISO 1250.

Furthermore, the DNG format of images from the S2 enables direct connection to Adobe Lightroom 4 workflow software and seamless data transfer to Adobe Photoshop. The dedicated lens correction profiles computed by Leica for both programs help photographers to achieve maximum performance from the H lenses. In cases of a longer shooting session with high image frequency, the S2 also offers significant advantages due to its low power consumption. The optional multifunctional grip S with separate controls is a particularly useful aid for optimum camera handling for portrait-format shots.

The Leica S-Adapter H is now available from Leica dealers including the Leica Store Washington DC.

LEICA X2: THE NEXT GENERATION OF THE LEICA COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA

Solms, Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG presents the X2, a new addition to the X-line of compact digital cameras. Handmade at Leica’s headquarters in Germany, the Leica X2 features a new APS-C-format professional CMOS image sensor with over 16.5 megapixels (effective 16.2 MP). In combination with the high-performance Leica Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens, a classic focal length for photojournalism, this sensor ensures maximum image quality and sparkling brilliance. With its refined styling and high-performance technical features, the Leica X2 offers unsurpassed performance in a compact package.

The Leica X2’s autofocus system has also been enhanced, allowing the camera to adapt to all shooting situations with enormous flexibility and enabling fast, extremely precise and almost silent focusing. The camera’s profile is complemented by numerous setting options from full manual control to automatic functions and an intuitive handling concept. These features make the Leica X2 the ideal premium-class compact camera for discerning photographers who wish to concentrate completely on their subjects and appreciate creative and true-to-life pictures.

The CMOS image sensor of the X2 is unusually large for a camera in the compact segment. Despite its high resolution of over 16 megapixels, each individual pixel on the sensor is very large, allowing the X2 to gather more light. The resulting benefits include low image noise, a high dynamic range and accurate color differentiation. The crop factor of the sensor is 1.5 in comparison with 35-mm film format, meaning that the Leica Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens of the Leica X2 becomes a universal reportage lens with an effective 35-mm-equivalent focal length of 36 millimeters. This is considered to be a classic focal length amongst prime lenses and has captured innumerable iconic images. The moderate wide-angle character and natural rendition of dimensions by the high-performance lens of the X2 open up a broad spectrum of different options for capturing those decisive moments in outstanding, authentic and richly detailed picture quality.

As a result of its simple operating concept, the Leica X2 offers clearly laid-out functions and intuitive handling. At the same time, it offers an impressive range of automatic and versatile manual setting options. Thanks to the ease of switching between manual and automatic control, photographers can concentrate completely on composing their subjects and choosing the decisive instant to shoot in any situation. The dials on the top deck provide grip when setting the shutter speed and aperture. Moreover, changing the plane of focus, the white balance and other imaging parameters allows photographers to consciously influence the look or mood of their images. In live view mode, the generously sized high- contrast 2.7″ monitor offers photographers complete control at all times and a bright and detailed view, even in strong light.

The features offered by the Leica X2 provide greater creative freedom and a wide range of photographic options. For instance, the Leica X2’s large sensor and fast lens make it ideal for shooting in available light. The camera also features a pop-up flash that can be activated whenever an additional light source is required. If more lighting power and flexibility are required, the accessory shoe of the X2 offers full compatibility with the Leica SF 24D and SF 58 system flash units.

The Leica X2 is characterized by clear lines and an intensely focused design concept. The linearity of its design and its compact, handy form are reminiscent of the Leica M-cameras. This, in combination with its robust, all-metal construction and premium, high-grip leather trim makes the X2 a classic Leica camera in both looks and feel. The camera is available in a discreet black or elegant silver finish.

An extensive range of accessories is also available to adapt the Leica X2 to each photographer’s individual photographic needs and style. A new offering is the Viso-Flex high-resolution electronic accessory finder with 1.4 megapixels and a 90° swivel function for shooting from unusual angles. Also available is a bright-line mirror finder that can be mounted on the accessory shoe and ensures a bright and clear view at all times, with no drain on the camera battery. An accessory handgrip increases the hold and stability of the camera and makes it easier to shoot one-handed. Leica continues to offer a comprehensive range of bags and cases: a premium-quality black leather case to match the elegance of the X2, an ergonomically designed camera protector in untreated leather, an ever-ready case in organically tanned cowhide to protect the camera during use and a system bag that offers more room for the camera and a range of accessories.

Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®, a professional digital workflow solution for Apple Mac® OS X and Microsoft Windows®, is also included in the X2 package. This digital image processing software offers a

wide range of functions for the management, processing and presentation of digital images. Leica X2 customers can download the software free from the Leica website after registering their camera.

The Leica X2 is available now through Leica dealers including the Leica Store Washington DC. The optional accessories will be available after the market launch of the camera.

NEW LEICA LIMITED EDITIONS: LEICA M9-P “EDITION HERMÈS” / LEICA M9-P “EDITION HERMÈS – SÉRIE LIMITÉE JEAN-LOUIS DUMAS”

Solms, Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG presents a new limited edition: the Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès”. Following the highly successful Leica MP “Edition Hermès” (2003) and the Leica M7 “Edition Hermès” (2009), this camera is the third in a line of premium special editions of the Leica M- System to be created in collaboration with the renowned Parisian house. The Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès” is being offered in a strictly limited edition. The exclusive numbers, unique product design and premium finishing with numerous extras make this a truly special edition in every respect.

The highlight of the Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès” is the “Veau Swift” calfskin leather in “ocre,” supplied by Hermès for the leathering of the silver-chromed version of the Leica M9-P camera. This extremely fine and supple leather is applied not only to the camera body, but is also used for the shoulder strap included in the set. The camera also sports a special design, created in collaboration with the automotive designer Walter de’Silva. Furthermore, various features of the camera body have been redesigned, including the top deck, the base plate, the shutter speed dial, the multifunction wheel and the shutter release. These details distinguish the cameras from the standard version of the Leica M9-P and emphasize the unique status of the limited edition. In addition to a dedicated serial number, each camera also bears one of a series of consecutive limited-edition numbers.

The Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès” is offered in two different sets, with either one or three lenses. When compared with their standard versions, the design of all the lenses incorporates numerous differences in their details, ensuring a perfect harmonization of the cameras, their lenses and accessories.

This first of the Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès” sets is available from June 2012 in a worldwide limited edition of 300. In addition to the camera, the set includes a silver-anodized Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH.

Following this will be a very special set available from July 2012. The Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas” is a celebration of the friendship and collaboration between Jean-Louis Dumas, the former president of Hermès, who passed away in May 2010, and Leica Camera AG. A strictly limited edition of only 100, the camera in this set is accompanied by three lenses: a Leica Summicron-M 28 mm f/ 2 ASPH., a Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. and a Leica APO-Summicron-M 90 mm f/ 2 ASPH., all featuring a silver-anodized finish.

This unique collection of photographic equipment finds a fitting home in a hand-finished Hermès camera bag that is available exclusively as a part of the Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas.” The camera bag is the first Leica camera bag ever to have been created by Hermès, a company world-famous for its manufacturing excellence. As an homage to Jean-Louis Dumas, a Leica photographer, this second set also includes a book with a selection of his pictures. The photographic work in two volumes shows an entertainingly diverse portfolio of 200 black-and-white images on 190 pages, all captured by Jean-Louis Dumas with his Leica M camera.

In the limited edition, the frame selector lever, accessory shoe and Leica script on the top deck have been omitted in favor of its unique design. In all other technical details, the cameras and lenses of the special editions are identical to those of the standard versions.

The Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès” and Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas” are available exclusively through Leica Stores and Leica Boutiques, including the Leica Store Washington DC.

In addition, an integrated stereo microphone with an electronic wind noise filter guarantees a crystal-clear soundtrack. Videos can now also be saved in Internet-friendly MP4 format and uploaded directly to social media or mobile devices, for example, without any need for conversion.

An integrated GPS module completes the list of features and functions offered by the V-Lux 40, allowing users to save the geographical coordinates and local time of every shot captured in the Exif data of the image files.* In addition, the camera can display the sightseeing highlights of the immediate neighborhood (1,000,000 so-called ‘points of interest’). A DVD included in the package contains maps of important cities and regions. After transfer to an SD memory card, these can be uploaded to the camera and used for orientation in unfamiliar places. Photos can be stored in the maps as thumbnail images.

The new design of the Leica V-Lux 40 is dominated by classic black. Chromed elements set contrasting accents and complement the camera’s refined and timelessly elegant look. Particularly easy handling is ensured by a large, 3-inch LCD touch screen that allows users to select or set numerous functions in capture and review mode simply by touching controls displayed on the monitor screen. A strong and resilient leather case is also available as an optional extra.

* It is possible that GPS tagging may not function in the People’s Republic of China and neighboring regions. Satellite signal reception may be impossible, depending on the location. In such cases, the positioning data may be recorded inaccurately or not at all.

LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 50 MM F/2 ASPH.: THE NEW MILESTONE IN LENS CONSTRUCTION

Solms, Germany (May 10, 2012) – Leica Camera AG presents a new milestone in the history of lens construction: the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. With the goal of creating a lens that fully achieves the opportunities offered by high-resolution camera systems, Leica engineers have successfully redefined the limits of what is technically possible. The result is an extremely high-performance lens that sets entirely new standards and currently stands as an exceptional talent amongst the standard lenses of the Leica M portfolio.

This new reference lens achieves the best test results ever seen in the Leica M-Lens program. The MTF curves of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. that describe the contrast of fine details and, in turn, the image sharpness, confirm its outstanding performance. Even the finest details are resolved with more than 50% contrast across the entire image field. This previously unattained value confirms the exceptional positioning of this lens. All images captured with the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. in any photographic situation show extreme sharpness and resolution of details from corner to corner of the image. Additionally, the apochromatic correction of the lens minimizes chromatic aberration on sharp edges to ensure natural rendition of every detail. As a result, photographers benefit from the best possible reproduction results at any print size.

The outstanding performance of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. is founded on the perfect interaction of all its design and construction parameters, from optical calculation and choice of materials to the sophisticated and elaborate manufacturing and finishing of the lens. Together with more than 150 years of experience in the design and construction of optical instruments, Leica’s reputation as the manufacturer of the world’s best lenses is once again emphasized.

The new design of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. is based on the optical design of its predecessor that has been on the market since 1979 and is the oldest lens represented in the Leica M portfolio. The classical specifications, 50 mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f2, offered an ideal starting point for further development. As such, Leica’s expert lens designers were able to concentrate exclusively on the improvement of imaging quality within these standard specifications.

In its optical design, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. is oriented on particular features of the Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. and the Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. lenses. For instance, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. also incorporates a floating element. The lens group behind the diaphragm is designed as a floating element that changes its position relative to the front group during focusing, ensuring that the lens achieves outstanding imaging quality throughout its focusing range, including at closer focusing distances.

The realization of the apochromatic correction of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. involved the use of specially formulated glasses based on original developments from the former Leitz glass laboratory. The use of such glasses requires great effort and many years of experience. As a result of the consistent advancement of optical processes, working with these high-quality glasses has been refined to such a fine art that they are integrated in the best possible quality into Leica lenses as evidenced today in the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH.

As a particularly reliable product with enduring value and made in Germany, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. is manufactured from only the best materials and is assembled in an elaborate process completely by hand at Leica’s factory in Solms. The combination of cutting-edge technologies and painstaking manufacturing procedures guarantees the consistently excellent quality of every single Leica lens.

The Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. in black finish will be available from Leica dealers including the Leica Store Washington DC from late July 2012.
