Benoit Mandelbrot Dies

The man who probably did more than anyone for establishing fractals as not only an interesting way to create images but also the use of fractal mathematics in many areas of science has died at the age of 85. His book “The Fractal Geometry of Nature” probably started many of us who use or have used fractal approaches to image creation. I know I came across this book in the mid 1980′s and led me not only to use the Mandelbrot Set as a standard test algorithm in my research work on parallel computation but also led me to experiment with it in art. He will be missed and remembered. … Read entire article »

A Think Tank for Camera Bags

Think Tank Photo Celebrates 5th Year Anniversary SANTA ROSA, CALIF.  U.S.A – One most often associates think tanks with groups of analysts pondering such heady issues as energy policy and global peace.  But a think tank dedicated solely to camera bags?  This didn’t stop designer Doug Murdoch from doing just that five years ago when he launched Think Tank Photo (www.thinktankphoto.com). Think Tank Photo’s roots are those of a classic American start-up.  Like Hewlett-Packard and Apple, Think Tank Photo literally began in Murdoch’s poorly lit garage in Northern California. There, surrounded by bolts of fabric, sewing machines, and a cutting table, he created a revolutionary vision for the camera bag business. Like a classic think tank, Murdoch founded his company on the principle that its output—the camera bags –should be the result of … Read entire article »

Canon develops world’s largest CMOS image sensor, with ultra-high sensitivity

Canon continues to demonstrate R&D leadership with successive ‘world’s-first’ image sensor developments Sydney, 31 August 2010: Canon announced today that it has successfully developed the world’s largest*1 CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera. At 202 x 205 mm, the newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and is approximately 40 times the size of Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor.*2 “Canon reinvests close to 10% of global net sales into R&D each year to ensure that we continue to push boundaries and stay at the technological forefront … Read entire article »

Canon’s 120MP APS-H Size Camera Sensor

Canon has shown a 29.2 x 20.2mm size 13,280 x 9.184 pixel CMOS camera sensor. It can also do full HD video from any 1920 x 1080 pixel area of the sensor. Now the mind boggles at a 50D type camera with such a sensor. The real issue has to be the lens resolution, unless they are doing something like 4 pixel sampling to get better colour handling. The march of progress continues. … Read entire article »

HP Supports Platinum Printing and Other Alternative Processes

In an interesting and timely development, HP has released a paper preset for their Z3200 large format printer line to make the production of digital negatives for alternative chemical photographic processed, like platinum and palladium printing easier. This is timely indeed, because of a rise in interest in what is called alternative printing processes and I highly commend HP to taking this step. Photographers need all the options they can get and anything that makes this easier is a wonderful development. Apart from the preset, HP has produced an excellent PDF of the process. Let me quote from it about how their preset works: “The process described here was performed with the goal of creating feasible negatives for monochrome and color alternative process such as platinum/palladium, carbon, cyanotype, gum, carbro, multicolor carbon, … Read entire article »

Computational Photography Testbed Camera, the Frankencamera

Computational photography, as we have talked about it before, is a coming together of the camera and the computer to do more than the camera can do by itself. Things like HDR, increasing depth of field and much more are possible.
