New FileMaker 9 Product Line Delivers 30 Ease-of-Use Breakthroughs including Live Connections to SQL Data

Innovative new FileMaker 9 PHP Site Assistant enables non-programmers to create PHP-driven websites
Press Release

FileMaker today announced the immediate availability of FileMaker Pro 9, (http://store.filemaker.com.au) a major new version of the most award-winning desktop database for Windows and Mac OS.
The new FileMaker 9 product line, which the company called its most dramatic new offering in years with over 30 ease-of-use breakthroughs, is available today, and includes FileMaker Pro 9, FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced.
FileMaker Pro 9 includes many new features, for end users and developers, to simplify creating, automating, sharing and reporting from databases, including a new Quick Start screen for new users to be quickly productive; Conditional Formatting, which highlights data based on parameters the user sets; and the ability to email a link to other FileMaker users, which they can click to instantly access your database.
The new version also offers breakthrough easy-to-use tools so FileMaker users and workgroups can easily connect to the world of company and Web data residing in external SQL data sources: MySQL, Oracle SQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
The new Server 9 products, which enable workgroups to share databases over the network and the Web, come with a completely modernised and streamlined Admin Console, so FileMaker Pro users can easily set up and administer Server software.
“FileMaker is the acknowledged leader in easy-to-use database software which empowers workgroups,” said Dominique Goupil, president of FileMaker. “With FileMaker 9 we go further. We make it easier than ever for developers and users to manage information in amazingly productive and creative ways. For example, our goal is to make FileMaker Server 9 so easy that FileMaker Pro customers can install it in 20 minutes or less, and quickly share database solutions.
“FileMaker 9 is perfect for innovative organisations who realise the benefits of empowered self-service workgroups,” Goupil said.
Early Evaluator Customers and Developers Laud New FileMaker Pro 9
“Not only is FileMaker Pro 9 easier for users, but the enhanced features such as the debugger and Data Viewer also make life straightforward and trouble-free for both IT managers and developers. I’m really looking forward to showing the External SQL Data Sources (ESS) feature to my customers as this is going to massively add to the potential uses for FileMaker Pro in the marketplace.”
Melbourne-based FileMaker developer Nicholas Orr, Goya Pty Ltd
“What we like most are the Conditional Formatting and Script Group functions. We can see great potential in the External SQL Data Sources (ESS) feature. This will allow us to open doors to enterprise customers. The FileMaker team has done a great job in that specific area. While few people have heard of FileMaker in Singapore, Easi-Link Systems develops all applications using this product. Customers buy the Easi-Link Systems solution because of what it does, and with FileMaker Pro 9 enhanced features we anticipate continued sales and growth.”
Singapore-based FileMaker developer M.F. Leong, Easi-Link Systems
“We believe the External Data Sources features are going to be pivotal in terms of opening doors to both new applications for existing clients, and helping us reach new clients. This makes integration with web and corporate SQL systems 100 times easier, and more than that, FileMaker suddenly emerges as a great front-end and reporting tool for other systems… what a brilliant way to very quickly build a content management system for a MySQL website.
“The additional features present fresh opportunities and will attract new clients to FileMaker. An immediate advantage is that FileMaker Pro 9 doesn’t have to use its own proprietary database engine and/or can work directly with corporate data sources. Many other favourites include Web Viewer, which adds dynamic User Interface (UI) controls making for more compelling user experiences. With data URLs now officially supported you can create a graph, display calculated results, or a warning message, with nothing more than a Web Viewer.
“Clients have been asking for Auto Resize, so I think that’ll be a winner with them too. It’s another feature that keeps FileMaker Pro 9 ahead of web applications. I personally like the Quick Start screen because people tend to launch the application first. So now, when users launch the application it will present a menu of databases right away. Finally, from a development perspective the big winner is the new scripting tools: these features are worth their weight in gold when developing large solutions and keeping things organised,”
New Zealand based FileMaker developer Craig Saunders, Digital Fusion
“FileMaker Pro 9 features that appeal to me and my team (which consists of part-time developers) are the ones that help to create the best possible user experience. They make it easier and quicker for us to develop workable applications. FileMaker Pro 9 provides easy access to resources that help us learn about the different features available. An additional consideration brought about by the disruptive environment in which development occurs, is that FileMaker Pro 9 enables you to be more productive in the small blocks of time available. However, my best pick is Conditional Formatting, which is very helpful in making the layout appear more intuitive and interactive to the user.”
Dominique Hawinkels, Security/Reception Manager, Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, New Zealand

“FileMaker 9 is truly a ground breaking release that extends the product’s scope significantly. External SQL Data Sources (ESS) is a significant step in the evolution of FileMaker. Top features on my list would be enhanced Web Viewer with special support for data URLs, multiple script editing windows, Conditional Formatting and finally, the ‘append to PDF’ feature greatly enriches the output produced.
“Along with ESS, each of the above new features opens up new possibilities and extends the reach of the product. All of these address a very specific area of need and will provide users and developers with greater control and a more consistent experience. All in all, FileMaker 9 promises to be a very exciting release.”
Melbourne-based FileMaker developer Ray Cologon, NightWing Enterprises
Connect to the world of data in External SQL Data Sources
Using the new one-way or two-way live connectivity to popular SQL sources, FileMaker Pro 9 users within any business or organisation can safely and securely create custom reports, add calculations and other fields, and even build relationships with existing FileMaker data – just using the easy-to-use tools of FileMaker Pro.
“Linking FileMaker Pro 9 solutions to the open source strengths of MySQL will greatly empower the developer and user communities of both product lines,” said Zack Urlocker, MySQL AB’s executive vice president of products
With the new PHP features of FileMaker Server and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced both users and Web developers can publish information to external websites, gather information from Web visitors, and create new solutions combining a Web-based front-end with a rich, FileMaker Pro back-end.
Mac users of the new FileMaker products can connect to SQL sources with the Actual ODBC Pack version 2.7, now available from Actual Technologies LLC (http://www.actualtechnologies.com)

FileMaker Pro 8 – The Missing Manual

FileMaker is one of the most useful programs to all sorts of computer users. It is just off most people’s radar. This book should help to make it more accessible.
Filemaker book review

FileMaker Pro 8
The Missing Manual
By Geoff Coffey & Susan Prosser
O’Reilly Media, 2005
ISBN: 0-596-00579-2

So many of us need to track information in one way or another. Many of us do this on scraps of paper, some use card files or electronic equivalents, some their word processor or others Excel. But many of us do not think about using a database.

FileMaker is one of the two, big database products for desktop computers. The other is Access. However, while Access is a Windows only program, FileMaker is a cross platform application, running on both Mac and Windows. In addition many of us believe it is easier to use than Access.

This book sets out to take you from the very beginning with what is a database up to making serious applications using FileMaker. Chapters include:
*    Your First Database
*    Organizing and Editing Records
*    Building a New Database
*    Layout Basics
*    Creating Layouts
*    Advanced Layouts and Reports
*    Multiple Tables and Relationships
*    Advanced Relationship Techniques
*    Introduction to Calculations
*    Calculations and Data Types
*    Advanced Calculations
*    Extending Calculations
*    Scripting Basics
*    Script Steps
*    Advanced Scripting
*    Security
*    Exporting and Importing
*    Sharing Your Database
*    Developer Utilities

This book achieves all it sets out to do. The chapters gradually build your knowledge from what is a database to how to use FileMaker to the more advanced topics. It does this in a logical and excellent way, never leaving you struggling for understanding. You can dive into particular chapters or work through the whole book, doing the exercises yourself. The best way to use this book is to read some of it and then go to the computer and try what has been discussed.

I’ve used this book myself in building a complete database system to manage my web hosting clients and their hosting accounts and domain names. The key and area to concentrate on with this book is understanding just what a database is, how they are structured, table relationships and such. Once you have this worked out, the rest flows pretty easily.

So why might a reader of The Digital ImageMaker want to play with database software? Well, what about keeping track of your sales of artwork, your wedding photography clients, commercial photography clients, web site work or publication history of your images? If you are in business in any way in the image making area there are probably many ways that you can use a database. Filemaker is a great way to do this and this book will help you to do it.

Photoshop CS2 in easy steps

A good reference book for beside the computer while working in Photoshop
Photoshop CS2 in easy steps
By Robert ShuffleBotham
Computer Step, 2005
ISBN: 1 84078 300 1

There are so many books on Photoshop. Most are good. And many people still report getting so far and then being overwhelmed by the complexity of the program. This book sets out to avoid that by proving coverage of Photoshop in easy, bit-sized pieces.

Photoshop CS2 in easy steps

Don’t expect to find a lot of big images in this book. You won’t find them. The layout of the book has one third of each page devoted to tips and trip up points. This puts a premium on space in what is a fairly small book for such a big program. Frankly I do not know if this is an issue or not. Personally I like inspiration with my reading and tend to feel that others do too. However, I know others who prefer not to see too much of other people’s work when they are focused on their own work and development. So, you see, that is why I am not sure.

The book comes to grips with Photoshop though the following chapters:
*    Basic Theory
*    The Working Environment
*    Opening and Saving Files
*    Image and Color Basics
*    The Painting Tools
*    The Editing Tools
*    Making Selections
*    Layers
*    Working with Type
*    Paths
*    Channels and Masks
*    Color Correction Techniques
*    Filters
*    Web and Multimedia Images
*    Working with ImageReady
*    Animations and Rollovers
*    Slicing and Image Maps

Everything you need as an explanation of Photoshop features is there. There just is not a lot of application or on how or why you would apply it. As such this is a classic software walkthrough book, you will need to find your inspiration elsewhere. That said, this is quite a good book for the Photoshop beginner.

A book for the student who needs a reference by the side of their computer to guide them, the hobbyist progressing from some other software and intimidated by Photoshop or the darkroom worker moving to the digital domain. Be sure to supplement it with inspiration from somewhere else.

From Back Bedroom to Country Mansion

Xara celebrates its 25th Anniversary
Press Release
Xara Software Picture
From a bedroom in a small English country village, in 1981, little did Charles Moir know that he was creating a software product – Wordwise, that would take the BBC Micro market by storm. From those little Acorns, his company grew vigorously to become one of the leading graphics software companies in the world. And now, the Xara Group is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
In the 1980’s, trading as Computer Concepts, it became the largest developer of software for the BBC, Acorn, Atari and Archimedes computers. It was from the rewards of those early days that Charles Moir bought the historic country mansion, Gaddesden Place, which now houses the Xara offices.
Over the years Xara has developed a wide range of products covering the whole realm of publishing software. It has pioneered many technologies taken for granted nowadays – from the world’s first check-as-you-type spell checker in the early 80’s, to award winning desktop publishing software in the nineties, to today’s most advanced graphics technology. Xara continues to innovate and develop leading edge technical solutions to this day.
Xara has been involved in the Internet from the very beginning. Xara Networks, a subsidiary of the Xara Group, was a pioneer Corporate Internet provider in the mid 1990s (this business was successfully sold). Xara does most of its business via the Internet and has millions of online customers, worldwide.

Xara’s first Windows graphics software, Xara Studio, was licensed to Corel and distributed for many years as CorelXARA. Now back under Xara control this product has been enhanced and was relaunched as Xara X and recently developed to become Xara Xtreme.

The latest, and perhaps most ambitious plan, is to take on Adobe and Microsoft in an attempt to create a new industry standard in the graphics and publishing tool market.  Xara Xtreme is evolving from a relatively niche graphics product for Windows only, into a general purpose graphics and publishing tool for Mac and Linux. Xara has recently open-sourced their product as part of this plan to establish it as an industry standard on Linux. This is territory neither Microsoft nor Adobe dare to tread.

” I could have retired many, many years ago but I’m on a mission to create the best graphics and publishing tools the world has ever seen.”, says Charles Moir. “I want to create a new industry standard. I’m sure that many people will think I’m mad, but I’m used to that. In the eighties they said we couldn’t compete against Acorn – we came to dominate that market. In the nineties they said we couldn’t compete with Corel – we were such a threat to them they tried to buy us out.
Now Xara is making waves again and people are starting to talk about us as a threat to Adobe, So that’s our challenge – to compete with Adobe and Microsoft. And we have something that they do not – an absolute passion for what we do, better technology and product and soon a product on all three platforms including open-source Linux. So lets see what this decade brings!” concludes Charles Moir in fighting mood.
Meanwhile, on 1st August, as part of our 25th Anniversary celebrations Xara is going mad for a day with a Once Only, One Day Only Offer – half price on all of our products. So everyone can share in our celebrations. www.xara.com/offers/25years/
