Sony photography exhibition captures Australian imagination

Real Photography collection celebrates life as art
Press Release
Sony Australia today opened the doors to its first photo exhibition, with a collection of images from real photographers. Each image was selected from Sony’s online Gallery, where everyday Australians were able to upload and exhibit their captured moments.
As part of its search to uncover Australians with an eye for photography, Sony has chosen one promising real photographer to have their image appear in an upcoming campaign for Sony’s digital single lens reflex (D-SLR) camera – the DSLR-A100. This gives the winner a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their photography featured in high profile national magazines, including the(sydney)magazine, the(melbourne)magazine and The Weekend Australian Magazine.
Flower shop owner, Charles McKean of NSW, used an overseas holiday as inspiration for his winning entry:  The Musician.  The winner and finalists can be viewed on the Sony web site at
Charles McKean said, “I took this photo while in Laos as I was astounded by the man’s serenity and the joy with which he played the instrument. This image makes you feel the music, even without hearing the sound. I submitted it to the Gallery as I wanted to be a part of Sony’s online community of photographers and to compare my photo with other people’s shots. I am so excited to have been chosen out of so many quality entries. The opportunity to be exhibited publicly is fantastic. The recognition is both humbling and wonderful.”
Tim Rich, Group Manager of Corporate Marketing Communications at Sony Australia, said, “Real photography is about taking a personal view of the world and sharing it with other people. It doesn’t have to be about a technically perfect shot, but it is about everyday people capturing a moment and evoking an emotion. Charles’ image and all the photos in the Real Photographers exhibition perfectly represent this vision.”
The images selected for the exhibition were judged by photographic industry members Brent Williams, Director of Australian Commercial and Media Photographers and Philippe Ruttens, Editor of Capture Magazine, as well as Marcus Cornish, D-SLR Product Manager, and Tim Rich, both from Sony Australia.
The Real Photographers exhibition will appear at The Clock Hotel, Surry Hills, NSW, from now until late January 2007. The Gallery continues online at, and features a wider collection of thought-provoking images.
The search for real photographs by real people was launched to coincide with the arrival of the first D-SLR camera from Sony. Represented by a new brand –  (“alpha”) – the A100 forms the basis of a complete Sony camera and lens system for enthusiast photographers. Featuring class-leading image stabilisation and anti-dust technologies to give you the very best start as a real photographer, the A100 marks a significant step for Sony in the digital imaging arena.
The camera is complemented by a choice of lighting systems and accessories, plus an extensive range of compatible Sony system lenses including premium optics from Carl Zeiss.
