The Epson B-510DN Inkjet Printer is a Winner

The B-510DN is a business printer, A4 or letter sized and very useful for photographers as well.

This is a four-colour printer, so it is not one that photographers would naturally consider. However a photography studio or even a hobbyist at home has need for the following:

  • A fast printer for general printing tasks;
  • Good enough photo printing;
  • Reduced ink costs.

Let’s be honest, all the printer manufacturers punish you senseless on printer running costs, and the cheaper the printer the more you know you are going to be bled for ink down the track.

This is one area where the B-510DN is different. Aimed at businesses with high volumes of use, it is certainly not a cheap printer to buy, but the ink cartridges are huge and last a truly amazing period of time. Ink costs can be as low as 4.2 cents per colour page, which is excellent and seemingly about half that of the nearest competition.

It is also a phenomenally fast printer, whether doing normal documents or photo printing. It is quiet while running and has no odour, unlike some laser printers. Colour pages print at up to 18ppm for text and draft BW printing at 37ppm. I didn’t time the full-page photo printing but it was faster than anything else I have ever seen in my studio.

The print quality is nothing less than amazing. Sure photos show the dots but it is far from objectionable, rather giving a very fine texture to an image and is really only noticeable in comparison with images printed on a high end dedicated photo printer with six or eight inks. We printed on all types of paper and loved the results on heavy fine art matt papers. Colour was spot on.

Paper handling is excellent. We experienced no paper jams and the combination of a huge capacity tray for 500 sheets and a top slot that holds 150 plain paper or less in thick photo paper is perfect for a studio situation. I saved two configurations in the printer driver of choosing paper source and type of paper and this allowed quick and error free printing on the right type of paper.

To be honest there is nothing not to like about this printer. It handled thick art papers well (up to 256gsm) and had excellent print quality on a range of plain papers.

This printer is very highly recommended and will be up for consideration for purchase as a general studio printer. It uses DURABrite Ultra pigment inks.

It would suit any photographer or designer who needs to print A4 paper and wants to keep their running costs down. It would also suit event photographers, as its speed of printing would solve a lot of problems for them.

Very highly recommended.

FodeoFlip – A Flippin’ Great Idea!

Low cost laptop personalizationPatent-pending FodeoFlip is the answer to a focus group of high school students who wanted to decorate the outside of their laptop computers. An 8×10 inch lightweight vinyl with a Post-It type of adhesive backing, the FodeoFlip acts as a frame to hold personal photo prints onto the laptop. Photos can be changed out as often as the user wants.

“Most of our current business comes from corporate promotions, and Honda was looking for 25,000 items for a promotion they were sponsoring for graduating high school seniors,” says Valarie Moody, President of Fodeo. “At the time, we didn’t have anything we could sell at the price point they were looking for. So we did a focus group.”

A lightweight vinyl, FodeoFlips come in several available designs that act as a “frame” for personal photo prints the user wants to show off. Simply place the FodeoFlip on the laptop, flip up one corner to place the photos, then flip the corner back down. Photos can be changed out as often as the user wants.

The repositional adhesive along the perimeter of the FodeoFlip holds the photos and the FodeoFlip in place without damaging the photos or leaving a residue on the laptop.

“We expect the FodeoFlip to have about a 6-month lifespan before needing to be replaced,” Moody adds. “With a low suggested retail cost of $4.99, it’s very cost effective to change styles often.”

Other hybrid products to be launched at PMA ’09 include a mini FodeoFlip designed to hold a 4×6 photo on dorm room or bedroom walls., “College students are limited by what they can do to decorate their dorm rooms. They are fined heavily if they damage walls with nails or tape, so the easily removable mini FodeoFlip is a great solution to making a dorm room seem like home,” Moody says. “Our designer bundle packed with a variety of designs within a color scheme makes it simple and affordable to cover an entire wall with photos of friends and family.”
About Fodeo: Fodeo is a 4-year-old company that began as a retail concept specializing in photo montages for personal use and transfers of old media to DVD. With the growing popularity of each new Fodeo product, however, the focus of the company changed to selling services and products via the promotions industry and retail outlets.

New Office All-In-Ones Offer Print, Copy, Scan and Fax Capabilities for the Home Office Professional
Multifunction printers, that combine printing, scanning, copying and fax are a growing influence on the printer market. Why have several devices taking up space, power points and USB connections when you can have one?

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, has announced two additions to the popular Office All-In-One (AIO) line-up – the PIXMA MX860 and PIXMA MX330 printers. Ideal for the small business operating out of the home, the versatility and overall ease-of-use of these two new Office AIO printers provide users with the comfort of knowing the finished product, whether it is a business presentation or a photo from a family vacation, will be of high-quality.

The Canon PIXMA MX860 Office AIO printer features Advanced Media Handling with Auto Duplex copying, printing and two-way paper feeding. The Auto Duplexing feature permits two-sided copying/scanning of letter-sized documents, without the need to manually turn over pages and re-feed the document. When copying, this printer even has the ability to scan and print at the same time, which can dramatically reduce the amount of time it will take to complete a project.

Canon MX860 printer

For the first time, a PIXMA Office AIO printer, the PIXMA MX860, will have Wireless LAN (802.11b/g)1 capabilities and an Ethernet network connection built-in for easy printing and scanning with multiple personal computers. In conjunction with Canon’s Generation Green initiative, both of these new Office AIO printers will have the Quick Start feature. The LCD changes from the start-up screen to the initial stand-by mode in a few seconds after pressing the power key, enabling input on the buttons to start operation.

“With the emergence of the home office, having a product that can perform many different tasks is essential,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “These two new Office AIO printers provide the consumer with the comfort of knowing all of their business and personal printing needs can be done from their home.”

The Canon PIXMA MX860 and PIXMA MX330 Office AIO printers feature the easy-to-use advanced copy function so common copy adjustments, such as erasing the frame created around a small scan, can be easily made right from the AIO printer control panel. The Auto Scan Mode2 automatically recognizes the type of document being worked on so it can be scanned and saved quickly and easily in the right format. In addition, scanned JPEG and PDF data can be saved directly to a memory card3 or a USB flash drive when attached to either of these printers.

Canon has equipped each unit with color Super G34 fax capabilities with improved speed and ease-of-use in mind. It includes features that allow users to receive up to 250 incoming pages in memory5 on the PIXMA MX860 Office AIO printer and 50 pages of incoming data in memory5 on the PIXMA MX330 Office AIO printers.

There will be new security features on both Office AIO printers to help protect important documents. One feature is designed to prevent users from misdialing while faxing by asking for a confirmation of the fax number originally entered before the fax is sent. If these two numbers do not match, the fax will not go through. Another security feature is the ability to create PDF files with password protection which will restrict access to printing or editing files without the proper authority.

For the photo enthusiast who is looking for an Office AIO printer that can produce high-quality photos, both Office AIO printers are up to the task. Each printer comes equipped with the ChromaLife100+ ink system6, which provides more vibrant and longer-lasting photos. To further enhance the home office photo experience, the hybrid system, which is made up of dye and pigment ink, delivers vivid, beautiful photos on photo paper and sharp, crisp text on plain paper. The Auto Photo Fix feature detects the type of photo being printed and is able to help correct red-eye problems, enhance facial tones and optimize brightness and contrast while improving color saturation to provide better looking photo output without manual photo editing.

The PIXMA MX860 Office AIO printer comes with a large 2.5-inch TFT Color screen to make viewing images and menus easier. With a five-color individual ink tank system, a resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi7 and ink droplet sizes as low as one picoliter, this Office AIO printer can produce a photo-lab quality borderless 4″ x 6″ photo in approximately 41 seconds8. The CIS scanner allows for high-quality, high-speed scans as well with an optical resolution of up to 2400 dpi9.

For the consumer who is looking for a high-quality Office AIO printer at an affordable price, the PIXMA MX330 features a 1.8-inch TFT Color screen, four-color ink cartridge system with a maximum color resolution of 4800 x 2400 dpi7 and a minimum two-picoliter droplet size to deliver outstanding photo quality. A photo-lab quality borderless 4″ x 6″ photo can be produced in approximately 45 seconds.8 The CIS scanner produces a maximum of 1200 dpi9 opticalcolor resolution scans.

Canon Supports ISO/IEC 24734 and 24735 Productivity Standards
Helping customers better evaluate and compare print speeds of various printer models, Canon will utilize the ISO/IEC 24734 and 24735 FDISS (Final Draft International Standards)10 for measuring print and copy speed. The proposed standards, which are in the final review stage under the FDIS (Final Draft International Standard) before official publication, measure print and copy output in images-per-minute (ipm), and calculate print and copy speed by printing out a number of standard Microsoft Excel, Word and PDF documents on letter-sized paper in default mode. Using these FDISS, the new PIXMA MX860 Office AIO printer will deliver output at 8.4 ipm for black-and-white documents and 5.6 ipm for color10, while the PIXMA MX330 Office AIO printer will create letter-sized documents at 7.5 ipm for black-and-white and 4.5 ipm for color documents10.

Generation Green
Canon’s commitment to the environment and helping to make it more sustainable is an inherent part of the Company’s kyosei philosophy and new product offerings. From duplex printing to ENERGY STAR® compliance and significant changes to product packaging, the Generation Green initiative is designed to provide partner companies, enterprise customers and consumers a way to identify and learn about the various environmentally-conscious product features and solutions select Canon printers offer.
