iPhoneArt.com launches LA Mobile Arts Festival in Santa Monica – August 18-26, 2012; Open Call for Entries: Deadline, July 15, 2012

Mobile art pioneers from around the world will show off their latest creations at the LA Mobile Arts Festival. The event will be Santa Monica Art Studios’ first-ever mobile arts exhibition showcasing nine days of mobile artistry from the heart of the West Coast’s contemporary art scene.

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) May 30, 2012

Mobile art pioneers from around the world will show off their latest creations at the LA Mobile Arts Festival. The event will be Santa Monica Art Studios’ first-ever mobile arts exhibition showcasing nine days of mobile artistry from the heart of the West Coast’s contemporary art scene.

The Call for Entries is open from now to July 15, 2012. Submission and sponsorship details can be found on the LA-MAF website.

Santa Monica Art Studios is a major mecca for contemporary art and design in the Los Angeles area. This vast, historic airplane hangar was converted to a modern-day artists’ colony in 2003. Under its soaring roofline, artists of every persuasion come to share, create, and sell their works in studio and exhibition spaces.

LA Mobile Arts Festival 2012 will be a fusion of art and technology, exhibited in Arena 1 at SMAS – 2,400 sq. ft. of prime exhibition space that shows off cutting edge artworks from curators across the globe. Here, early aviation pioneers once roamed the hanger. What better place to champion today’s passionate iPhoneographers and mobile artists as this underground movement takes off worldwide. What better city than Los Angeles – home to a panoply of world class visual effects and digital artists, and to Silicone Beach, a new hub for iPhoneography and mobile art related tech developers.

“We welcome submissions for all the mobile arts—photography, sound- and video-based works, sculptural and performance art pieces,” said Daria Polichetti, co-founder of IPA. “We are thinking big – and encourage artists to investigate ways of going beyond traditional presentation methods. We are currently accepting proposals and will also be reaching out to artists with ideas for solo and collaborative installations. We are looking at new printing techniques, three-dimensional installations, environmental design and much more. Funds will be made available for the projects we are most excited about,” she said.

Some of iPhoneArt.com’s award winning artists who will be taking part in this year’s festival can be seen on the2011 IPA Mobile Grant page. Best of all, many of the festival’s featured artists will be able to take advantage of IPA’s upcoming iPrints Store, enabling them to sell exhibit images as well as works from their larger portfolios, not just to the Los Angeles crowd, but around the globe. The iPrints Store is the beginning of an innovative and far-reaching sales platform for mobile artists. It is currently in beta testing, and will be launching soon.

Canon Australia Opens A Canon Academy That Directly Competes With Those Of Us Who Teach Photography And Support Canon

Canon has announced in Australia the opening of the Canon Academy to offer workshops and courses on photography. They have done this by partnering with an existing workshop organisation, URCreative.

I have to say that I think this is a really bad idea, and let me explain why. There is an active community already of people running workshops and courses in the photography area, including me. Those of us who use Canon naturally do a lot of our teaching using Canon gear. I’ve probably personally facilitated the sale of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Canon cameras and even more lenses and accessories. I have to say I don’t feel much like continuing to personally recommended Canon gear when they are actively pushing people that compete directly with me. Canon could have much better served its customers and those of us who teach using Canon gear by instead making the Canon Academy an online only thing that listed the workshops and courses that we, the existing teachers, were running. Indeed they could have actively profiled us on the website, building a closer relationship with us rather than pissing us off. Sadly this decision by Canon smells of a decision made by an MBA rather than someone who really understands and is passionately involved in the photography world. Very sad. Think of it in the same way as if Canon started selling cameras directly, and how the camera shops would feel.

Bad move, Canon, bad move.

What follows is the Canon press release.

“Canon’s World of EOS is designed take people’s photography to the next level through inspiration, creative challenges and skills development at all levels, including the rapidly growing number of first-time DSLR camera users,” said Rebecca Pearson, Canon EOS Assistant Brand Manager. “Canon Academy is a natural extension of this experience and we are excited to be providing a comprehensive learning opportunity in a range of formats and locations for people of all skill levels – from the complete novice, and upwards.”

Canon has partnered with URCreative, the photography training division of the Creative Institute of Australia, to lead Canon Academy’s portfolio of courses and workshops. It will include five types of courses, six workshops and two online offerings in almost 30 locations around Australia to complement the brand’s existing online tutorials available via the Canon World of EOS.

“Canon’s expertise in high-quality imaging and our intimate understanding of user needs are matched by URCreative’s experience in delivering quality instruction,” continued Pearson.  “Canon Academy students will receive the very best photography learning and development delivered by trainers at the forefront of photography education.”

Greg Lee-Conway, URCreative Managing Director, says that students will achieve tangible improvements in their fundamental skills as well as an increased appreciation for the creative potential of photography. “Partnering with Canon, the market leader in DSLR photography, enables us to broaden and elevate our learning program with the use of a range of high-quality, dynamic products and accessories,” says Lee-Conway. “We’re looking forward to continuing to share this experience with a host of new Canon Academy students and enable more budding photographers to realise their creativity.”

PENTAX Announces the K30

B&H Photo Video is excited to announce the launch of the new and much anticipated K30 DSLR Camera from Pentax.

NYC, NY (PRWEB) May 21, 2012

B&H Photo Video is excited to share with photo hobbyists the launch of the new and much anticipatedK30 DSLR Camera from Pentax.

The Pentax K-30 camera is ergonomically designed to be as compact and easy to manipulate as possible while maintaining enough room to house a large APS-C-sized sensor and mirror. The body is also fully weather-sealed and can function properly in temperatures below freezing (14°F / -10°C). A low-profile optical pentaprism provides 100% field of view while the new state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation.

Weather resistant design with 81 seals set in its compact, lightweight, portable body, make the K-30weather, dust and cold resistant with proven functionality in sub-freezing temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C). Its exterior was designed to be both sporty and functional for active outdoor photographers – a large grip for a firm, secure hold of the camera; a low-profile pentaprism housing for reduced height; and a rounded, soft-rubber casing for a solid grip of the camera during vertical shooting.

Additionally, the new K-30 features high-speed burst shooting at a maximum speed of six images per second, a high-speed shutter unit with a top speed of 1/6000 second, and convenient dual electronic dials for quick, fingertip access to exposure control and several Auto Picture and scene modes.

Newly developed SAFOX IXi+ Autofocus (AF) module for improved autofocus performance
The Pentax K30 features the new state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation by incorporating a diffraction lens to minimize chromatic aberration in accordance to the characteristics of each individual lens. A dedicated sensor also factors the light source into its calculations at the time of shooting. 9 of its 11 focus points have cross-type sensors to capture subjects in sharp focus, while a spotbeam assists the AF system during low light situations. Its AF algorithm has also been upgraded in all areas for efficiency and accuracy. A new expanded area AF function allows the sensor module to continue to track a moving subject in AF select mode, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. This greatly improves the accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus shooting, and autofocusing performance when using a telephoto lens.

Optical finder with 100% field of view
While smaller and lighter than traditional mid level DSLR camera models, the K-30 comes equipped with a glass pentaprism finder with a 100% field of view and approximately 0.92X maximum magnification (with a 50mm f/1.4 lens at infinity) to cover the entire field of view for easy focusing and framing. Since its viewfinder delivers a clear view of the subject even in the brightest sunshine while also eliminating parallax, the K-30 responds efficiently and reliably to demanding applications and subjects, such as landscapes requiring delicate, high-precision framing, and sports scenes where the timing of shutter release is critical.

The K-30 also accepts interchangeable PENTAX Natural-Bright-Matte III focusing screens to facilitate manual focusing operation. Optional focus screens include cross-lined and scale types, to accommodate more specialized applications.

Pentax also announces the DA 50mm f/1.8 medium-telephoto autofocus lens, which is designed exclusively for use with the K-mount interchangeable-lens (ILC) digital cameras. Its state-of-the-art optical design technology delivers sharp, clear images from edge to edge. The new 50mm f/1.8 lens delivers a focal length of 50mm or 76.5mm in the 35mm format, and is ideal for photographers of varying levels, from amateurs to professionals. Additionally, the f/1.8 aperture makes it possible to increase camera shutter speed when photographing in poorly lit conditions, which minimizes camera shake and helps eliminate blur.

For extra preventative measures, the front surface of the PENTAX-DA 50mm f/1.8 lens is treated with the original SP (Super Protect) coating, which repels dust, water, grease, and other substances that may adhere to the surface of the lens.

The new K-30 is available at B&H Photo for pre-order, in three body colors: Crystal White and Crystal Blue, with brilliant, glossy finishes; and Black, for a traditional DSLR look. It is also compatible with all PENTAX K-mount lenses.

Fancy a Desktop 3D High Resolution Printer?

Printer With an Expanded Choice of Seven Different 3D Printing Materials
High Temperature Materials

Objet Ltd , the innovation leader in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing, has today launched the new Objet30 Pro – the most versatile professional in-house desktop 3D printer available on the market. Unveiled at RAPID, the new desktop 3D printer offers 7 different materials, including, for the first time on a desktop system, clear transparent material and high temperature resistant material.

The Objet30 Pro is positioned as the ultimate rapid prototyping solution for designers and engineers, ranging from industries such as consumer goods and consumer electronics to medical devices and design consultancies.

The Objet30 Pro takes its place as the new top-of-the-line addition to Objet’s existing desktop 3D printer line which starts at $19,900*. With a small footprint, professional 28 micron print quality and wide ranging material versatility, the Objet30 Pro produces high quality prototypes with a choice of 7 different materials and functional properties, offering designers and engineers a world of possibilities:

  • Objet clear transparent material (Objet VeroClear) for simulating PMMA/glass;
  • Objet High temperature material for heat-resistant static functional testing;
  • Objet polypropylene-like material (Objet DurusWhite) for simulating snap-fit parts; and
  • Four rigid, opaque materials for standard plastic simulation (Objet Vero Family in black, white, gray, and blue).

“Having the correct tools and resources to advance our product development is critical for our organization,” saidGregory Janice, Engineering Manager at Princeton Tec. “The Objet30 Pro’s ability to print parts made with a clear transparent material on a desktop 3D printer combined with its ease of use and versatility made the Objet30 Pro a sound investment for our team.”

Collcap Packaging Ltd., an Objet customer creating innovative cosmetic, perfumery and personal care packaging, has also been testing the new Objet30 Pro desktop 3D printer. Adam Smith, Technical Manager at Collcap, comments, “We knew a desktop machine would meet our capacity requirements quite happily, but for the packaging work we do, we really wanted the range of materials that has previously only been available with bigger machines. The clear transparent material for instance is ideal for prototyping our bespoke fragrance bottles and other glass or clear plastic products, whilst the range of colored rigid materials work perfectly for simulating plastic bottles, caps and fittings. The excellent surface finish and detail provided by the Objet30 Pro are also crucial so that our eye-catching designs look and feel as they’re supposed to when we present them to our customers for approval.”

“The Objet30 Pro is the next evolution in desktop 3D printers developed specifically for professional users”, saidDavid Reis, CEO of Objet. “This desktop 3D printer provides outstanding print quality with a choice of seven materials that until now could only be found in much larger, high-end 3D printers. The Objet30 Pro is the perfect combination of professional, versatile in-house 3D printing at an attractive price point,” concluded Reis.

Sony launches NEX-F3 camera with 180° tilt LCD screen for easy self portraits

New NEX series camera from Sony

  • APS-C size 16.1 megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
  • Auto Portrait Framing for easy, top-quality portraits
  • 180° tilting LCD screen for self-portraits
  • Built-in flash for low-light shooting

Sydney, 17 May, 2012: Sony Australia today launched the latest Compact System Camera, the NEX-F3, packing DSLR- features into a small compact body and price, making it refreshingly accessible for all photographers. The NEX-F3 will allow users to enjoy the creative world of high-quality imaging with interchangeable lenses without the bulk and size of a Digital SLR camera.

The compact sized NEX-F3 features the same space-saving mirrorless design as other cameras in the E-mount family. Far bigger than sensors found in point-and-shoot compacts, the 16.1 effective megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor captures more light for flawless, low-noise stills and crisply detailed Full HD video (50i/25p). Just like traditional DSLR cameras, it’s easy to create beautiful defocus effects with your subject focused sharply against a smoothly blurred background.

The NEX-F3 helps novice photographers craft top-quality portraits with ease. Auto Portrait Framing identifies your subject, trimming the scene to create beautifully composed, high resolution portrait photos.

Self-portraits are simple with a quick 180° flip of the LCD you can press the shutter button, or let Smile Shutter take the picture for you automatically with the three second timer.

Shooting options in dim light or indoors are broadened with the addition of a built-in flash. As introduced on the acclaimed NEX-7, this handy pop-up flash lets you brighten up portraits and other shots without the need to carry an additional flash accessory.

Getting close to the subject used to mean packing a more powerful lens but now you can enjoy high-quality close-ups with Clear Image Zoom which doubles effective magnification of the lens. Unique to Sony, By Pixel Super Resolution Technology maintains superb image detail, tones and textures. Ideal for travel and everyday shooting, it’s a great way to boost your maximum focal length without carrying extra hardware.

For beginners, the NEX-F3 takes the guesswork out of choosing the right camera function with the Superior Auto mode recognising a wide range of scenes and subjects and adjusting the settings with the skill of a seasoned photographer.

From the cameras premium feel, enhanced by a high-quality handgrip, to the battery boost of 18 per cent to 470 shots from a single charge and easy charging via USB, the NEX-F3 is a must have choice for photographers wanting to step up from their point-and-shoot compact.

SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens

An ideal travel partner for not just the NEX-F3 but the entire Sony E-mount family, the new SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE offers a powerful 11x zoom range and superb resolution in an easy to carry lens. Smaller and 12 per cent lighter than its predecessor the SEL18200, the new E-mount lens features Optical SteadyShot, to compensate for the effects of hand-shake. Direct Manual Focus also gives precise control over touch up focus, for fine creative control over beautiful images.

The NEX-F3 Compact System Camera and the SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens will be available in Australia from mid June 2012 and end of June respectively.

TouchType Case for All iPads

The TouchType case is currently up on Kickstarter.

It is a leather or polyurethane case for the iPad that also has a pocket to hold an Apple Wireless Keyboard. This is a great solution because the Apple keyboard is a decent size and really nice to type on. I already use one with my iPad, so this is a no brainer.

The TouchType looks great and can hold the iPad in either landscape or portrait orientations, which is a real plus. Since the Kickstarter project has already gone way past the sought amount it will go ahead. Their website is http://www.touchtypecase.com/

Unless you’ve experienced it you may find it hard to believe, but the iPad with an Apple Wireless Keyboard is a very productive combination for writing and other tasks. This case makes that even easier by bundling the two together into a really attractive and clever case.

Alioscopy® USA, a 3D technology provider today announced that Adobe® Systems Incorporated has integrated its Alioscopy auto-stereoscopic, 3D multi-view algorithm as a new feature in Adobe® Photoshop® CS6 Extended software. As more and more digital imaging artists create content in stereoscopic and auto-stereoscopic 3D, Alioscopy offers a unique patented process for generating 8-view images for viewing and play-back on auto-stereoscopic 3D HD LCD displays.

In Photoshop CS6 Extended, anyone with a stereoscopic camera (left and right lens equipped) will be able to upload two-view images to Photoshop and convert it to multi-view (8-view) for display on an Alioscopy 3D screen—currently available in 21’’, 24”, 42”, and 47” configurations. Additionally, artists will be able to generate 3D objects directly in Photoshop or in other 3D software packages and apply the Alioscopy multi-view algorithm to create Alioscopy-ready content.

By integrating Alioscopy’s patented technology into Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended, millions of artists in the global Photoshop community will benefit from a streamlined, all-inclusive workflow to generate “no-glasses” 3D content—one of today’s fastest growing trends in digital signage, trade show and events, advertising, and education.

“Creating and integrating 3D in Photoshop over the past few years has opened many new doors and possibilities for Photoshop artists,” said Zorana Gee, Adobe Photoshop Senior Product Manager. “By incorporating the Alioscopy 3D multi-view algorithm and camera model into Photoshop CS6 Extended, we’re offering artists yet another way to generate compelling 3D images and content which adds a whole new immersive dimension to content creation and editing,” added Gee.

Years in development, Alioscopy technology helps digital content creation artists, brand retailers, tradeshow exhibitors, service businesses and museums attract and captivate their audience with 3D content that has incredible depth and dimension on an LCD display fitted with a lenticular lens. Potential customers stop to view auto-stereoscopic 3D content at least twice as long as traditional 2D media, and Alioscopy-generated content in “no-glasses” 3D offers still, animated, and interactive imagery that simply can’t be ignored.

“Adobe Photoshop is a ubiquitous digital content creation tool with over a million users worldwide, and we’re thrilled to license the Alioscopy no-glasses 3D algorithm as an integrated feature in the new Photoshop CS6 Extended,” said Pia Maffei, chief operating officer for Alioscopy USA. “The majority of Alioscopy customers turn to Adobe daily to create, augment, and finish their digital images, animations, and photographs. The Alioscopy 3D toolset is a powerful way to import, convert, create, and edit ‘no-glasses’ 3D content that will be Alioscopy-ready,” added Maffei.
